Angry 2017 Chevy Colorado diesel truck

This truck seemed like it should pull my 4000 lb RV with no problem. It is rated to pull 7,800 lbs. After towing my RV 7,380 miles, the differential failed. Chevy does not have a heavier differential option. Chevy repaired the differential and increased the length of my warrantee. After towing my RV another 7,296 miles the differential failed again.

Looks like this truck cannot handle the towing miles & I'm told I need to replace it with a 1/2 ton, 1500 truck model.

Has anyone had towing problems with the Chevy Colorado?

Welcome to the forum. Sounds like you need to upgrade your truck. We are in a Class A so don't have any information on towing

You are joining a good group of folks here with lots of good information to share.

Good luck and enjoy the adventure!

2017 Chevy Colorado diesel truck

My guess is that you'll have better luck with that question on a Colorado/canyon forum.

If you are in fact towing below the rated weight limits (GVWR, GCWR, CCC and RAWR), then I'd demand that GM buy the truck back under lemon law. I think you have two clear data points showing you that truck isn't going to cut it. Make them take it back before you start shopping for a half ton...

Coloradans.com.

Have you followed prescribed break in procedures for new differential gears before towing? Any measurements of diff temp while towing?

There are plenty of those towing travel trailers out there.

I'd ask GM for a complete new axle assembly.

It an interesting coincidence two failures with only 100 miles difference between two gear sets. Is that two trips on the same route?

My 2017 Canyon Denali's differential has went out 3 times . Twice towing my 4500lb TT and once just driving towing nothing ! The 3rd time they replaced the whole rear end . I'll be towing my TT again back from my property in Morton Ms back to Clearwater Fl and I'll see how the new one does . The lemon law says you need to give them 3 tries to fix the problem before you can do any anything !! I'll repost when I'm back in a couple of weeks to up date my trip !

Can you post a pic of the yellow and black GVWR sticker on the driver's door jamb? I suspect RAWR is pretty low and you are at or near max.

I saw a brand new Colorado/Canyon with a gooseneck hitch. I sighed...He was hauling a Bobcat on a flatbed,ugh.

Maybe look in to a Mag Hytec finned cover. Better cooling.

Maybe add a transmission cooler. If it has one add another. I agree, it should tow 4,000lbs. That is a medium sized bass boat with gear.

Hi ! Welcome to IRV2! We're sure glad you joined the gang!

Yup, that's a pretty clear message that you need a bigger truck!

Good luck, happy trails, and God bless!

I have to wonder what failed. Did an axle break? Did the ring and pinion break, spider gear pin come loose?

Did you hear any weird noises before it broke? How about brakes squealing going around turns? There is a recall/campaign, GM#18198 for missing C-clips on some axles in that year range. Heck, they even assembled certain of these 4x4 trucks with the totally incorrect rear axle ratio. Recall# for that one is #17095.
