They use 6061-T6 very tough and tempered (T6) ,had a sailboat with a mast made of this alloy (they all are) and a ball peen hammer might dent it if you took a big swing.
Difficult to repair ? maybe but not much is banged out and bondoed anymore ,its remove and replace - steel or al.

Not sure why Ford started with their truck line when IMHO they should have started smaller. Like the Ford Focus or Fusion. But I guess there is more $$$ to be made if they can keep up or inch ahead of the other truck competition.

If the HP and TQ (my guess) 460HP and 900ft lbs. Torque that will (like the Ram) surpass the HP and TQ of the mid level DP motorhomes. If I remember the diesel engines were 6.7 litre, 8.3 litre and 8.9 litre. I think the 8.3 litre was 400-425HP with 800 ft lbs of TQ. That is the same as my 2012 Ford SD with a 6.7 litre engine.

At this rate by 2020 these truck engines will producing 1,000 ft. lbs.of torque....cool.

Where is the rumored 10 speed transmission? That would make more sense than more HP/TQ in my opinion...
If you've ever towed with a 2015-16 6.7, you know that you have a lot of power to spare, but a few more gears would really sweeten the pot!

Definitely agree with the extra gears. Love the 4.10 gearing on my truck, until I drive on the interstate.

I speculate that this has three possible answers or a combination of all.

1. The F series is Fords flagship and cash crop.

2. Many truck buyers are an encyclopedia of specs, ratings and options. We know more about our trucks than they do. The average small car buyer knows if it breaks they fix it. That's about it. Many don't even have a clue how many cylinders are under the hood and I would bet just as many couldn't care less if their car was made out of aluminum or silly putty.

3. The commuter vehicle lineup is already lightweight and as fuel efficient as needed to balance things out to meet the CAFE criteria, so there is no money to be made by retooling/ reinventing the production plants.

They actually crack much more frequently than you think. And if Ford built it like an aircraft, no one could afford one.

"Love the 4.10 gearing on my truck, until I drive on the interstate"

Why is that? Mine are 4:10's also and I am fine with them.

The damage is financial, not metallurgical.

We have an 80 mph speed limit in many parts of Wyoming. I know it's fine, but the sound of the engine running at whatever that rpm is bothers me. And the fuel economy (5500 miles now) at that speed is terrible. I rarely go the speed limit on the interstate with this truck.

27000 miles on mine now. Love the 4:10's. Rarely run solo, but on occasion have had it at 80. DW confessed to having it at 95+ just to try it. Don't recommend such behavior. She is a 77 year old delinquent. I gave up decades ago.

I doubt that a shopping cart will ding this military grade AL as easily as it does the normal body panel. The only better body panel was on the Saturn.

Took a look at the '17 F450 at the TX fair--not too shabby, but not sure it will be worth what the list will be on it when they let the prices out.
I certainly would take one if forced on me as a gift....
But I did get a free Superduty hat.
