2020 GM HD payload

The new 2020 GM HD has not posted payloads, up to now. I just found them here:
https://www.gmc.com/gmc-life/trucks/...ailer-like-pro

At 5,892 for the DRW CC it must have the 14k GVWR, but figure maybe 5,300 actual for a loaded truck.

Finally!

Now I want one!

I’ve checked the door sticker on several 2018s and they we around 4000. Maybe they improved it for 2020.

The 2020 model is a redesigned truck. It is different than the 2018 with increased capability. More high strength steel in the frame accounts for most of the increase.

The diesel engine is the same as 2019 (which was tweaked for more power in 2019) and a new 6.6 litre gas engine for the 2020 model.

The GM trucks for 2020 will compete well with Ram and Ford

I'd be surprised if it's that low. I'd have to check specs to be sure but I think my 2011 DRW CC has 6600 lbs payload capacity. I know at 2 tons in the bed it doesn't squat too much either.

They did beef up the cooling quite a bit for 2020.

I doubt even a 6.0 gas is that high GM isn’t to 14K GVWR then the curb weight would be 7,400#, But I think it was closer to 13K putting curb at 6,400# darn light for DRW.
Might take a look at your “Yellow Sticker”.

I was a bit off, but not that much. According to trim level I have payload should be 5894 lbs. Obviously my auxiliary fuel tank and 5th wheel hitch take some of that off but I think it's more than adequate for my needs.

Is that off a table/chart/brochure or your trucks payload sticker?

I was wrong as even more diesel improvements were made in 2020 beyond those made for the 2019 model year.

GM really upped their capability.

As a lifelong lover of Chevy, it pains me to say this.

The 2020 HD is hideous. Not just ugly, but “make a freight train take a dirt road” fugly. The Sierra is much better, but I am not a fan of giant plastic steps carved into the bed sides.

And some of the issues I have:
No more Allison 6 speed. 2020 buyers will be beta testing the GM built and “Allison branded” 10 speed tranny. Allison is just licensing the name. And since most of the people I know driving the current 10 speed 1500s have been dealing with bad shudder and vibration issues (GM is on the 4th attempted fix right now) I will be taking a pass until at least 2024.

Fancy step tailgate hits any trailer ball mount, have to remove ball to use step.

Although I am glad they moved the DEF fill to behind the fuel door, they made the fuel door hinge plastic and they are already breaking off the 2019 half tons. You think they learned their lesson after the plastic dually fender debacle.

Payloads are basically unchanged. GVWRs got tweaked slightly on the DRW 3500 up to 14k but that’s about it.

As good as the current Allison is and has been, it is now the weakest link in the power train. The new engine is pushing it right to its limit. The new 10 speed by all accounts is a pretty stout unit and is able to put more power to the ground. Time will tell but I don't see the new tranny as that big of a risk.

There's a reason that GM hardly sold any 3500 DRW's. Most over the year sales totals almost always show the GM's 3500 DRW as dead last in sales. @4,000 lbs for CCC the question is why would anyone want one when Ford and Ram have been in the upper 5,000 lb range for years? I very rarely see a GM DRW when out driving in town or on the Hwy traveling.
Looks like GM is just now finally catching up the the other two.

Agree with Cumminsfan - for every 10 Ram dullies I see, I see 8 Ford dullies and 1 Chevy dully....maybe.

GM will have the best (most powerful) gas engine with their new 6.6 litre until the Ford 7.3 is out.

I agree with you, the 6 speed 1000 would not allow for the tow rating GM was aiming for. Allison would never allow it to be rated to tow 35,000 lbs. The latest generation Allison 1000 was and is extremely adequate with the 450hp/900ftlbs the Dmax is currently making albeit with a paltry tow rating of about 24,000 lbs.

The new transmission allowed GM to rate the truck to tow way more than it is truly capable of. This is a marketing gimmick that I always was proud to say GM had stayed out of. They went from the most realistic tow ratings to the most ridiculous.

I respect anyone that disagrees with me, but I do not believe any one-ton pickup should be towing 18 tons-with a GCW of over 21 tons.
