I too have done all the research I can and will do on the 4runner (want to buy one ?) I have given up and bought a Wrangler. This is what I found; You can tow a 4runner 4down but only with a front and rear drive shaft disconnect, automatic or manual shift ,because the transfer case will not lubricate itself enough not to cause damage to the seals...etc...

Rear drive shaft must be disconnected from the transfer case. The rear bearing will not get lubricated unless the input shaft is rotating, so.. if you tow it with the rear drive shaft connected.. it will eventually cook the rear bearing on long trips.. I think less than 250 miles are fine.

as for the front drive shaft, you MUST leave the transfer case in 2Hi.. if you put it in 4Lo or even neutral the ADD will actuate (Vacuum). Put the transmission in Neutral..

review:

  1. Transfer case in 2Hi
  2. Transmission in Neutral
  3. Disconnect Rear drive shaft (it's 8 bolts) or install the Remco rear drive shaft disconnect.
