4Runner as a Tow Vehicle

Anyone else using a Toyota 4Runner as a tow vehicle? I am using mine to tow a Micro Minnie.

I'm sure it has enough power so as long as you keep the weight low it should work OK. How does it work towing the minnie? How much does the minnie weight?

A 4Runner is like any other mid-size SUV - you can pull a lot heavier trailer than you can handle the hitch weight of that trailer. You can either tow a nice travel trailer, or you can haul a load of people of stuff, but not both at the same time without exceeding the GVWR of your 4Runner.

Hit the CAT scale in the middle of your trip, with the trailer tied on and loaded to normal towing weight, with the spring bars of your WD hitch hooked up to normal tension, and with all your family and stuff in the 4Runner. Fill up with gas, then weigh the wet and loaded rig. Add the weights on the front and rear axle to get the GVW of the 4Runner. Compare the GVW to the GVWR of the 4Runner. Then and only then will you know whether your SUV is overloaded.

Thanks for the information, the micro Minnie weights 2800 dry and it is just my wife and I traveling. Next time I am traveling with it I will weight the whole rig. I haven't towed it yet loaded but with just the trailer it has been fine.

You'll be fine on capacity. Enjoy!

The 4runnner will be perfect for you at that weight. I would get a nice weight distributing hitch with built in sway control and set it up properly. What many people do not realize is that the 4runner is a body on ladder frame truck hiding behind an suv facade. Many other "similar" suv's are much lighter built with much lower towing capacities. Only limiter to a 4runner besides the obvious capacity limits are it has a somewhat sort wheelbase which goes back to the recommendation to get a good hitch. You will have plenty of capacity to spare once loaded - just don't overload the vehicle itself. Will run forever as well - my 2004 has 190k and seems like a new vehicle to this day.

I had them put on an equalizer hitch with a sway bar. Also brake controller in the cab. Would you recommend a trans cooler?
