Are you kidding me? You live in NH and you're asking about 4-wheel drive. You'll probably have a hard time finding a 2-wheel HD truck up there.

I use my truck for other towing apps than just the TT especially during winter. Pretty much a necessity where we live.

When I was working I managed a roadway network with several snow plow shops. The majority of the snow plow drivers had two wheel drive vehicles to get to work.

I believe there is an old saying that says something like: "when you get a 4x4 stuck you're usually really stuck." I've had three straight 4x4s and I've always kept old saying in the back of my mind and never really got one stuck. We tow a TT and yes, that 4x4 comes in kind of handy sometimes.

I can stick a 4x4 as good as anybody, but I will never be w/o it.

Many dealers that order nicely equipped 3/4 and 1 ton trucks automatically add 4x4 to them. For a $55-$60K truck, what's another $5K? 2x4 trucks are often hard to find unless they're stripped trucks for companies usage--not personal use vehicles.

That said, I have no desire to climb up in 4x4 trucks that seem to be getting taller all the time with their 18 and 20 inch wheels. And I have no desire to pay $110 per base labor hourly rates for maintenance on front axles, lock out hubs and even a transfer case.

My F250 is now 14 years old and I bought it for the long run. For the price difference between 2x4 and 4x4, I can pay for 20-30-40+ wrecker calls and still come out ahead. And I've never yet been stuck under any situation with high quality A/T tires.

I will only be in NH during the summer and with the snow that is coming Tuesday I am more convinced that I want out of here in the winter. I plan on being in FL or AZ in the winter.

Thanks everyone you have helped me make up my mind and get my truck with 4WD.

You don't need 4wd, lsd is good enough.

However, it is difficult to find a truck with only lsd and a gearing ratio for towing like a 410.

I think if you do a plus and minus compare list, you won't think it's a good value... But those times that you would be stranded without it... ... I've been surprised at the number of times it's come in VERY handy. I'm glad I have it.

Where I live I would not be without it - plus it is hard to find a 2WD unit on the lots around here Also resale value would be next to zero.

For me, the 4wd is as much for exploring once I've unhitched the trailer. I love just heading out from the campground, taking any road that looks like it might be interesting, and going as far on it as I feel that I can safely take it. I'm not a hard core 4-wheeler - if I was I'd have a Jeep Rubicon. But that doesn't mean that I won't need some decent clearance and the traction to climb a few steep grades, sometimes on loose rock.

My F-150 is not as rugged for off-roading as my old 1980 Toyota 4x4 was (the truck in my avatar), but then I didn't buy it as an off road machine. I've been on lots of jeep trails in the Colorado high country that don't require a Jeep, but still aren't suitable for a 2wd vehicle. I don't like to put that sort of restriction on my travels.

Also a unloaded or not hitched up dually with no pin weight has very little traction.Your front wheel drive car will have more traction. Its an added expense for sure as others have stated.I like 4 wheel drive, would not even make it up my driveway without it on some snow days.My situation is different than most.I have a 12k winch out front that I also had to use a couple of times.I have 6 speed manual with lockout hubs ,so when backing camper I unlock hubs put transfer case in low range and backup at a snails pace.

Yep, Diesel 2WD's are worse than gas 2WD's. I learned that lesson in the early 80's with the old 6.9L Ford. If you nose in on wet grass, loose gravel, or sand with a slight downhill grade, you may be looking for a tow strap.
