4x4 or rear drive only?

I originally didn't think I would need 4WD, until I stored my parents trailer for a short period of time at my house. My RV parking is narrow, with the roof overhang within inches of the trailer on one side and I'm inches from the fence on the other. The house is in a tract so the house sits about 4 feet above street level so I have an inclined driveway with no apron in front of the RV access. Trying to back the trailer up into the RV access without hitting the roof overhang, I was going slow. Got the trailer and the truck rear wheels up just fine, but needed 4WD to get the front tires up the curb as in 2WD the rear tires spun on the concrete.

Even once my parents RV access was finished, they use 4WD to back their trailer up their driveway incline because they have decomposed granite they need to back up over.

I have used 4 wheel drive several times when we get a lot of rain and the yard gets soft to keep the tires from spinning. Another thing in low it makes backing so much easier. After a camping trip with friends my buddy bogged his camper while trying to back his camper in its spot. He had to get his neighbor to pull him out then he had to clean the mud off the camper and truck. It's nice to have it if you ever go off pavement.

where I live ( DFW ) there are very few areas where you can park an rv or trailer on your property unless it is on some kind of paved surface like a concrete pad or gravel , etc. most places will give you a ticket or a citation of some kind. not to mention many homes are built with little or no side yard for access. you are lucky to have enough space to carve out a free spot to park. we have a good size corner lot so put a 12' gate and a second driveway off the side street at the back of our yard.

I have had 4X4 before. I bought it for the snow plow.
Grew up on farm with only 2 wheel drive. If it was muddy, and we needed to get in we walked or used a tractor. (Also 2 wheel drive). When I got my own pickup, if I spun wheels on pavement, I was called stupid. Farm truck or mine spin on gravel, I got a$$ chewing. Spin on dirt or mud, a$$ whipping, then go down to creek get gravel to fill ruts. We did have tire chains for worse case deal.
Snow/ice? In most of the country the streets will be clear in a day or 2, stay home. But way too many people think they are too important, "I got to go!", buy 4X4. Then, no matter what the weather they are on the streets. Every thing out there has 4 wheel brakes...

I don't mind seeing people justifying their needs for 4x4 or stating the reasons for choosing 4x2. i just hate seeing one camp belittle the other....

I spent a lot of time walking as kid to get the tractor to pull out the truck. [emoji12]

Unless you just can't take small percentage increase in fuel economy, weight, or up front cost I think it's worth having.

It says nothing about your manhood or whatever how many wheels turn...just another useful tool in your toolbox.

My 4X4 Silverado has 300Lbs less Trailer weight capacity than the exact same 2 wheel version.
The reason I purchased the 4X4 was for Winter and other driving versus pulling the trailer.
Kind of up to the buyer on what they want in a truck that happens to also pull a trailer.

I have owned 3 2wd trucks and 3 4wd trucks over 40 years. The only truck I ever got stuck was a 4wd truck.

I am a good example of driving a 2wd truck a bit more cautiously. My mindset with 2wd I will get stuck. Mindset with 4wd is I will not get stuck.

I would never buy another 4wd truck without a locking rear diff.

If you're buying a diesel truck... absolutely get 4wd. The diesel engine is great to pull a heavy load, but the diesel engine is also very heavy. The weight of the diesel engine can cause you to become stuck on dry ground, if the front end is lower than the rear end (gravel parking lots or grassy slopes... don't ask me how I know this).

I have had four diesel trucks through the years. Two 2wd and two 4wd. With the 2wd trucks, I had a couple of times that I wished I would have had 4wd.
With the 4wd trucks, I have never been sorry that I have 4wd

Just food for thought. 4wd will get 1 to 2 mpg less per every mile you drive.

And maybe worse. Maybe 2 to 4 mpg less.

There are pros and cons to most things. Trucks are one them. Let us know what you get and I for one will be happy for you.
