HI all,
Are 5th wheel hitches attached to the bed or are they bolted through the frame?

Through the bed, welded TO the frame.
My Husky 16K slider hitch (i have a SB) has 4 hefty L brackets welded to the frame and then bolts holding the rails that are on top of the bed to the L brackets below.
So if I was ever to take this hitch out of my truck permanently, it would only leave 4 inconspicuous 5"x5" L brackets welded to the frame right around the rear axle area.

The 5th wheel hitch MUST be securely attached to the frame. My B&W hitch is bolted to the frame rails using existing holes.

My Reese is the same as Rusty's, brackets bolted to the frame and hitch bolted through the bed to the brackets. Transferred it from the 95 f250 to the 01 f350 in less than an hour.

I don't know of any current model hitch that requires welding to the truck frame anylonger. Most are bolted to the frame, but never to the bed. Mike

I think all of the chassis manufacturers specifically state....Thou shall not weld up thy truck frame....

Racer22, you need to check with the maunfacturer of your truck before you weld on the frame. It may well void the warranty. Most of todays truck frames are made of a high strength steel and welding will ruin the properties of the base material. All of the hitches I have seen are bolt on designs.

Ken is right check with your truck dealer to see what can and can't be done when it comes to welding on the frame. When I bought my 2003 Dodge Dually it was expressly forbidden to weld on the frame. If you do and something happens to the frame you will not have any warranty.

Use the special bolts supplied with the bracket kit. The bolts are similar to wheel studs, having splines that press into the frame, eliminating all possibility of movement or frame weakening.

All go through the bed, bolt to or around the frame but no welding on the frame . New box frame adapter used to bolt around the frame not through it .Bolt only through the frame in the side not more than I"closer to the top or flange , brackets two bolts each . care to not cut or drill in to the fuel tank or lines ,or wires. assemble hitch and rails position in bed, mark for frame holes check with instructions measure twice drill once. center of hitch pin should be one to three inches forward of the rear axle ,to one inch to the rear of the rear axle . Skipper entry level over fifty years.
