adding battery to a enclosed car trailer

Hi all, I want to add a battery to my enclosed car trailer and this is how I think it should be wired. Anyone that has done this please feel free to chime in.

So, if I tee into the aux wire on the plug side (trailer) and run that wire to the + side of a battery mounted on the trailer and run a ground wire from the - to the frame of the trailer the lights should work no matter what and when the truck is hooked up it will charge the battery? Do I have this right?

First off... does yours have the 7-way connector? If so, here is a picture of the wiring layout... Use the pin marked for 12V and yes, it will work just as you describe.

For best performance, you should be using heavy duty wiring for both the supply and ground return; at least #10 or larger. Some use #4 welding cable for this.

With smaller wiring on a run that long, it will still work, but due to the voltage drop in the wiring, you will only get about 10 amps going to a severely discharged trailer battery, i.e. 10+ hours to get the battery back to about 75% charge.

Instead of running a ground wire to the frame, run it into the Bargman trailer plug which has a ground wire. Here is the standard wiring procedure. .
