Broken front axle Jeep TJ
The last trip off road I destroyed the CV Joint on the front passenger side.
By the time I got to the road I had damaged the axle yoke
We are just about to tow 2500 miles back from Arizona to Ontario.
I have to remove the passenger side front axle and use the jeep in 2 wheel drive mode and repair, replace as necessary when I got home.
Then I got thinking this would be like putting the Jeep on a tow dolly and from what I have read the transfer case may not like this set up. Front and Rear axle should be turning at the same speed.
Complicating this discussion is I have an automatic Aussie Locker on the front Diff. This may or may not keep the front driver's side axle, front axle and all turning at the same rear Diff RMP.
Any ideas on what transfer case mode, manual gearbox selector would be best to get this jeep back home?
The best i can think of would be to remove both front axles and remove the rear drive shaft U joint, but then the jeep would be inconvenient to use on the return trip.

I am no expert on TJs, but I would think by taking both front axle shafts out, a tow dolly would work. All you would have turning in the front is the differential, with no axles to turn you wheels would not turn.
You could also drop the front drive shaft as well.
Why not get a replacement axle shaft?
With a front locker, the other axle will turn.
I do not think you would have to remove the rear drive shaft, if you removed the front drive shaft.
Last resort would be put it on a trailer.

No access to a tow dolly or a trailer.
Leaving shortly, and a new axle is 700 dollars, can pick up a used one at home for a fraction of that cost.
Just looking at the best set up to protect the transfer case.

Thanks for your response but all your wheels, axles are travelling at the same speed, I have a broken/removed axle.

OK just re read your OP.
The transfer case does not care if it is turning one or two axles in the front, and technically in two wheel drive the front axles are free spinning, they are not attached (getting power) from the transfer case.

On a TJ the front driveshaft rotates in 2wd. With one axle shaft removed I think the transfer case won't see any difference. So flat tow it as you normally would.
For verification, I suggest you post on one of the jeep specific forums.

I have an 00 Cherokee, which is close enough in design and function to the TJ. Due to abuse from snow plowing, I have broken the front u joints more times than I can remember. The last time was just before leaving on our snowbird trip to FL. I removed both front axles plugged the shaft holes with plastic bags. I towed it 4 down from NH to FL and back and drove it around that way for 7 or 8 months, until I fixed it. This essential made the Jeep a 2WD with high-low range. I also have an Aussie in the front axle. The transfer case is lubricated by the rear driveshaft rotation. I haven't had any issues with the XJ since then.

That's what I wanted to hear, my situation to a tee. Remove the axle so It is not banging around and tow on... Thanks...

My thoughts...
I would think that if your transfer case is in N and trany in N or P you should be free.
If I read or understand correctly, you took out the linkage on front axle between CV boot? In any event it should not matter I would think at all.
I am visualizing in my mind what my TJ looks like and if mine is like yours you should be fine.
I would have to see it though in order to be certain.

With the unit bearings up front you might have to re install the outer stub end of the axle for the bearing. Not sure but check it out. That's why I loved the old locking hub system.

The stub axle must be installed and torque or else the bearing will blow apart!

That's what I did, I just cut off the C/V joint and left the stub in place.
All good so far.
