After 20 some odd years swinging a wrench I might be able to clarify the designation.
We used four different designations for all vehicles on any paper work involved with repairing a vehicle.
2WD and RWD is generaly used to describe any rear wheel drive vehicle
4WD or 4X4 is generally used to describe a Four Wheel Drive vehicle
These vehicles usually have a selector in the vehicle to shift a transfer case from 2WD to 4WD and sometimes Low and High Ranges for rough terrain and off road applications.
FWD is a Front Wheel Drive Vehicle meaning there is no application for power to the rear wheels. Technically we could refer to this as a 2WD but rarely do.
AWD or All Wheel Drive is any vehicle that has power to all four wheels full time. While these vehicles do have superior traction and handling in adverse conditions they are NOT generally considered an off road vehicle.
