hey guys/gals,

just wondering if any of you had an idea on what's going on. i have a "chirping" noise that happens every once in a while when not towing, but happens more frequently when towing. it sounds like it coming from the back end of my truck. i took it in to the dealer where i got it, and they said everything is "tight", and blamed it on some "active suspension" springs i had put on. the thing is... this noise was happening before that. anywho, i was think maybe the shocks? but the truck rides fine. then i thought maybe the back end was going out? i really have no idea. oh... i have a 2001 chevy 1500 4x4. please no chevy jokes. i'm hoping this doesn't effect our camping season. thanks to all. have a good memorial day weekend!

One thing that I had found years ago was the parking brake cable and bracket in the rear. If worked just enough on the road that it was a slight noise in the vehicle. If that is not it, get under the truck with some on in the drivers seat. Start wiggling and giggling brackets, cables, brake lines and exhaust system and you will probably find it.

Another place to check is a loose baffle in the muffler. This will usually show up on either acceleration or deceleration.

I had a 99 Chev 1500 4x4 with an active suspension. There were no noises from it at any time. I would tell your dealer to keep looking. Good Luck

Try going to http://www.gm-trucks.com/home/ in the forums section and asking. I had this problem with a 01 2500LD and the dealer lubricated (I believe) the rear universal joint. He indicated it is a common problem. It does not seem to be anything serious, just annoying. The noise kept coming back and he said to keep coming back to him to get the lubrication done until it went away. Never was a cost to have it done.

Could very well be a dry leaf spring. Happens alot on trailers. Don't grease it up though. It will only get worse as dirt sticks. Try some dry lube, like graphite. It may be tough though to get under and between the springs. I've heard of some people stopping this with a peice of plastic acting as a small lube plate, cut from milk jugs. You may have to jack the weight off the springs.
