Class A PA

Ok, went for the Class A permit today.....
Event list:
Arrived at Licensing center, get number, wait, number called, conversation as follows:
Him: "What do you need today?"
Me: "I would like to get a Class A non CDL."
Him: "Why?"
Me: "I have a 350 and that and the trailer together are greater than 26K."
Him: "A CDL"
Me: "No a non CDL, not for money"
Him: "For hire?"
Me: "No....not.. for.. hire, not commercial, I signed that paperwork for my registration, not for commercial use, not for hire."
Him: "What is the gross weight?"
Me: "Of the truck or combined?"
Him: "The truck."
Me: "13300 pounds."
Him: "Can't be... what does it say on the door post?"
Me: "13300...."
Him: "It is a 1 ton right?"
Me: "A F-350..."
Him: "The gross weight on it is not that high. A 450 is."

The practical examiner leaned in and stated, "Is that your 4 door dually out there?"
Me: "Yes..."
Examiner: "That can gross out at that..." ...........

Got the paperwork but after the other testing center, 12 miles from the house versus 44 miles, telling me the license did not exist , the state telling me to to see the testing center , I did not bring a checkbook for the permit . Went back a half an hour later, DW works 5 miles from there.
Me: "Just so you know here is the gross on the truck." {showing book}
Him: "It needs to be the number on the door pillar."
Me: "It is....."

Take care of paperwork and money...

Me: "so only a practical test is required, if I get something with air brakes I will have to take the knowledge test for air brakes to get the endorsement?"
Him: "Yes, you will have to get your CDL."
To my self, "not required! State does not require!"

Me: "Have a nice day."

I do realize that it is not common but can't they have a cheat sheet?
