Can anyone tell me what the cost difference is for regular maintenance on a diesel vs. regular maintenance on a gas engine? I will be buying an F250 in the near future and I think the diesel would work out well for what I require. I intend to keep the truck for at least 8 years. I will be towing a 5th wheel of 9000 lbs. GVWR about 30% of the time. I don't require a 4 x 4. Cost of gas vs. diesel and mpg. are my reasons.

First, Diesel is far less than gasoline now, and for each gallon you use, a savings of about 20 cents or more will be seen. Then, you will receive better mileage and performance from the diesel. When you hit a mountain that requires some guts, it will more than pull that 9,000 lbs, and smile doing it.
You can expect to get about 1 million miles on the diesel engine over its life span, and about 250,000 on a gasoline. When you decide to trade the diesel, the trade in value will be much higher due to the engine. My Dodge 2500 Cummins Diesel gets regular service, every 4,000 miles for oil, lube, filter. Basically, treat it with common sense and care, and the diesel will serve you long after the gasoline engines have given up the ghost. Hope this helps.

Actual maintenance costs for my truck (diesel).
Fuel filter is $45, replaced every 15K miles. Oil filter is virtually the same price as for a gas engine. Motor oil, requires 10 quarts, double the amount for a gas engine. With proper fuel system procedures, a tune-up is never required. Keeping the fuel system free of contaminants is paramount. Air filter is about the same cost for both.
With the price of the diesel engine now approaching $7,000, you must calculate your individual desires. For instance, in SW Indiana, gasoline prices have dropped to the same price as diesel fuel again.
I tow with a diesel, see sig, and would be very hard to convince to try a gas engine again regardless of fuel prices.

In my area, the initial premium paid to purchase the diesel engine is more of a deposit than a cost since it is recovered when the truck is sold or traded in. Been there and done that with my previous Ram 3500 V-10 dually!
