You do have to consider every day use. I'm fine with it but the wife wont drive it. In my case, another vote for DRW

Then the SRW was/is not correctly set up.
10K is nothing for a SRW

Just an observation of mine. SRW trucks are always towing at a slower speed than DRW trucks. If you watch a trailer behind a SRW truck you will see it sway. Maybe not a lot but I can see it.
Watching DRW trucks towing I do not typically see as much (if any) sway fron the trailer.
On your 500 mile day how many SRW trucks do you pass? How many SRW trucks towing pass you?
Again...just an observation.

Out on the roads, I don't think amount of back wheels dictate who's passing who. I see more of what idiot is trying to do that when he shouldn't be. Also in the top 3 mfg's, there's mot much if any difference in drivetrains. In fact, you'll be surprised just how close a 2500 is in parts to a 3500. For Dodge, which I know about, most of the diffence is the front hubs have a spacer bolted to them, for the inset wheels (dually wheel flipped backwards) and the rear axle on a dually is narrower to accommodate the wheels, and one spring is added. In the later Gen 2, Dodge didn't badge any single 3500's. They were the same 2500's with the added spring, but kept the 2500 logo. I had one. They had a recall on them because they were released without the cab lights. I didn't want those so I never took mine in. Just about every other part is identical and the same part number. Oh, the 3500's do get a tad bit bigger alternator. I would imagine a Ford and Chevy use the same logic. Now that extra back wheel (some call them training wheels) do make a huge difference.

I tend to agree you shouldn't NEED a DRW for 10k...but I do believe a DRW will always have a slight advantage

Excellent discussion guys. This exactly what I was hoping for. I know a SRW is fully capable for this load. The question is the quality of the tow for the driver.
You are correct, there all sorts of TV in the CG. I amazed how many are gassers. But then if a guy only tows flatland 60 mi to and from home that will work fine. I know the gasser won't work for me going through the mountains. (Economy and power/control). I see predominately 2500 diesels (rarely 350/3500 SRW). The 2500 doesn't have the payload for the size of fiver I might like to have some day. Hence the question on 3500 SRW.
A few more data points:
Scale info:
Truck wet/loaded: 8200 (cat)
Trailer loaded 9500 (cat)
Tongue weight 1150 (sherline)

Economy---there's the next problem with the current crop of trucks .
32 gallon gas tank (vs my 35) and less economy (18 vs my 22) makes me want to keep my 2006 Ram due to the range on the fuel tank.
Do any of you guys with new trucks see a reduction in towing economy?
With my 10,000 pound trailer I can get 12 mpg through the mountains. Without the trailer I easily get over 21 mpg Calculated and confirmed by the trip computer

Didn't say 10K is a problem for my SRW 3500, but I have driven DRW many miles. DRW is more stable towing or not. You should drive one at speed on a curvy road.

My 04 2500 did better on all round economy. Of course the 12 is 3500 4x4 and alot more to move. I think really though, the egr system on it is what's holding it back. I have plans to remove that. Guys that have done that have seen the economy back up to where the older ones were.

I have ram srw with 4074lbs payload and pull a 15-16500 (depending if rzr is in garage) toy hauler. I am not over any of my limits but I'm right there at them per cat scale. Honestly a dually would be better for 16k plus imo, but 10-13k etc the srw will have more than enough capacity. That being said, if I had a dually I doubt I would go to a srw towing a fifth....

"going to take every bit of junk off my 16"
Make sure you don't have any warranty left. There is a way to delete them without removing all of that stuff, and of something like a transmission issues come up, you can reconnect it then take it in. That's for a Dodge. I'm not familiar with Ford or Chevy.

Fuel economy on the 13+ cummins trucks us pretty good. My '14 dually does the same, maybe alittle better than my '05 3/4 ton did. Mixed driving the dually is averaging 16-17. On the highway it does 20... the 05 barely did 15 mixed driving. Towing my 7k lb TT the 05 did 12ish... towing the 14k 5er the 14 dually is getting 10ish... maybe more as I have not taken a longer trip.
And deleting all the emissions... why? It's been very reliable on the 13+ trucks... why destroy your warranty over a non-issue?

first egr engines are anything but reliable. just ask any truck shop what the #1 warranty issue is, its the egr system. 2 circumvented. the trans. issue, went manual. hate autos in a working pickup. warranty issue, we all know warranty is interpreted by the dealer and how they want to handle it. the dealers i would go to could careless if that garbage was still there, most recommend getting rid of it, all the major 3. completely remove instead of just deleting, just less junk to work around. when you do this turbo spins up faster, produces more boost, and the engine runs cooler
