Custom grill

Love the new truck but after 1 yr. I wasn’t happy with the bug and stone impacts to the radiator and other coolers. And with complete baffles around the radiator to maximize cooling there is no ez way to even clean off the bug remains. Aftermarket grills and inserts are all about appearance, not functionality, so I decided to mod the factory grill.

I cut out the factory mesh and replaced it with black powder coated aluminum mesh from Custom Car Grills. It is 1/4 inch hexagon with a 77% open area and covers the entire area from the hood to the bumper, even the open gaps below the grill and in the center of the grill. I also added mesh behind the large bumper cutout.

Here are a couple of pics of the finished grill.

On my 03, I put door screen behind the grill and wire tied it so it doesn't move, have had it there for over 5 years and no bugs or crap in the radiator stack. I pulled the push pins out of the top cover that goes between the radiator and the grill, installed the screen and that's has been it.

That looks really slick....reminds me of the screen front that Lund made several years. I installed a Fia screen front on my '09 F350, then had my local tarp repair shop make a screen to cover the opening in the bumper.
