Yeah, I don't think the small TDIs have any of these.

I am sorry but you are incorrect in this statement. The VW Passat requires DEF (UREA) usage which uses the same 2.0L diesel engine as the Jetta car and sport wagon which does not.

Like i said i only work with offroad industrial engines. But i would imagine on-road vehicles would fall into classifications based on vehicle size(weight ratings). I'm just speculating on that, because that's how i would do it. I can't seem to find a good chart for it.

I have heard "if you can afford, etc., etc" far to many times about my RV and it's many problems/expenses.
IMO any statement, (about any subject), beginning with "If you can afford ***", and ending with "you can afford ***", is ridiculous and not at all helpful.
A statement like that is not cute or clever, (nor is it necessarily true).... but it certainly is condescending and insulting!

my understanding is that the DPF is what filters out the soot. In earlier motors, raw diesel fuel was injected as part of recycling the DPF. Newer motors (2010+) mix the DEF in with the fuel to burn off the soot in the DPF rather than diesel fuel into the DPF. Probably to only reason for the slight increase in MPG for the new motors.
I could be wrong, but that is how I understood it to work.

The way i look at it, it's about an extra $40 to top off your DEF at each oil change. It's not that big of a deal IMO considering the added towability and comfort of a diesel.

My 2012 Chevy Duramax holds 5 gal and I've driven 6000 mi without the refill message when starting full. Will run 900 mi before shutdown from there.

Was told by Chevy service manager (his words not mine, so can't confirm this) more DEF used at idle than when running down the road.

The DEF is injected with some sir after the engine burn and in front of the SCR. It is not mixed with the diesel fuel.

Probably like putting the Banks kit on our DSDP, but I've passed every emission test here in WA since and our laws are mostly the same as CA as far as emissions go.

What Banks kit? There are lots of them, and as far as I know, Banks does not do delete equipment, and definitely not delete tunes.

That could make sense. There's not enough heat at ideal to burn fully and clean. Also, the DPFs at idle won't be doing much either.
I never let my diesel (or any gas car) idle to warm up. All around bad practice and clogs the DPFs. Fire it up, give it a few seconds to make sure all the oil is flowing and under pressure and go. Stay off boost for the first few minutes and keep the revs down till oil reached 200F.
