One of my buddies with his RAM tows a 35’ 10,000lb TT and steadily gets 25mpg.
With work, I tow weekly 15,000lbs+ with a big dump trailer and get 22-25mpg. My TT is tiny. It’s only 21’ and 4,000lbs. I get in the mid 20’s mpg with it easily.

What kool aid our you drinking?
I also have a 2008, Dodge (RAM) Mega CAB, 6.7L Cummins with the 68RFE auto with 3:73 differentials 4X4. I also have a Smarty S67 installed using 60HP/120lb-ft TQ CaTCHER Level 3.
I have never been able to achieve 21 MPG with my truck since new. The best I ever got was once a high of 19.8 MPG when I was not towing my 5er. This is usually around 17 MPG when not towing.
When towing my 5er I usually will average between 10 and 12MPG's. My fuel mileage is all hand calculated and not from the LIE-O-Meter in the truck OHD.

Two neighbors of ours also have newer Ram 6.7's, both tow 5'ers frequently, both in the 10-12k weight range. 10-13 average mpg reported between Washington and Arizona. If they said they were getting mid 20's I'd either watch where I step or scrap our DP and buy one.

I'll take two. Neat.
A doubling of the normal MPG that I have seen is just not possible while towing. I have seen some folks report a 10-15% increase in MPG with mods and chips, but 100%+ better MPG. Nope. There's something wrong with the numbers, or there's something very unusual going on here.

Id take a gas engine and a lot of rear gear anyday. Diesel repairs maintenance etc all cost more. Diesel cost upfront about 10k extra. If you just have to have a diesel go ahead. All the mileage numbers imo are those trying to justify buying a diesel. I see it and hear numbers all the time. once the crowd leaves gawking at the new diesel. ask what they really get mpg wise. pulling an RV travel trailer or 5ver. your still pulling a barn door. Fuel mileage just isnt in the cards. lol

Well all the numbers come into play some time.
Deep gears and big cu in eats a lot of fuel! Unless you always travel at 55 or less that beast has got to have a big appetite. Then there are hills even with deep gears, they must be high rpm, and slow with the load you are pulling.

Yes, that's a pretty common Dodge troll. It's normally between 20 and 25 mpg while towing a 5er. Sometimes you get the supertroll who goes for almost 30 mpg while towing a 25,000 pound 5er, but those are pretty rare. Put anyone else in that truck just to verify the miles and fuel consumption, and you'll get 9 mpg.
They'll never prove it to you, but they'll brag about it all day long.

The 2017 work dodge gets 8.8 and the 03 6.0 gets 12.5 pulling the same trailer on the same roads. Its an 09 jayco 324bhds amd weighs about 10k going down the road. Both trucks have ranch hands to help with aerodynamics. Those are real world hand calculated numbers. Oh, and the inlaws 11 ram 1500 with 5.7 got 5.5 pulling the same trailer, same roads and yes i know way too much trailer for the truck. The 5.7 was obnoxious having to get fuel so often, the 6.7 times it about right, the 6.0 wears me out because it lasts longer than my bladder by alot.

Big cubic inches uhh 496. 6 speed allison, 4:88 gears. 17k trailer axle weight, 6200 pin weight 7 to 7.5 MPG. 35k combined weight truck and trailer. Seems to be consistent anywhere. Flip the tow haul button, 3000-3200 rpm and ride. 65-68 mph. Thats plenty fast for 45ft of Teton and my MDT. Drive by the tach and PULL.

Ive been curious, how does that combo pull considering youre 9k over the rated gcvwr? Would you buy a 4500 again? There are a bunch of crewcab 4500s for sale used and with the wife wanting a 16k toyhauler im considering one. Feel free to pm me.

Did I read correctly or do my math wrong because that would mean your truck weighs 12 000 lbs????
