Dual 220 amp alternators

I recently purchased a diesel Ram 3500 DRW which had the dual 220 amp alternators ... my question is will I have any more current or voltage going out my seven pin connector to trailer or fifth wheel... if not is there a way to get more power to towed unit ...?

Thanks in advance...

Joe

The wire size running from the battery to the connector at the rear of the truck will limit the amps that will get thru.

Some have run a pair of heavy guage wires from the truck battery to an Anderson connector at the hitch and then to the RV batteries.

That gets good amps to the trailer for charging.

Voltage will be the same, but as said above you will need heavier wiring to carry the available amps.

That extra alternator is unnecessary for a trailer, even if the wire size will charge the batteries on the towed RV. You'd be better off to spend the money for part of a good solar system for your RV because that will charge the batteries even when you're not towing.

When your truck "sees" the truck batteries as being fully charged, it will turn off charging, which then it will not charge your TT batteries. I don't think you will benefit form anything you do like to put a bigger wire going to the back.

Was it a used truck? I'm wondering why it had this setup. Does it have an inverter on it somewhere?

When you connect a charged battery to a discharged battery the current flows to the discharged one.

When that happens, the charged battery voltage drops and the alternators sense this. The alternator starts charging both.

Ever hook up jumpers to a dead battery and hear the running engine labor, when it starts charging the dead one ?

Connecting chassis batteries to house batteries with large cables is how every MH charges their house batteries. It works.

its a pretty common option on Diesels.

It's a common option, but I don't think it's used much unless the buyer intends to use the truck for snow plowing, or the vehicle will be upfitted with a lot of electrical demands, like an ambulance.
