Ok, being a motorhomer I haven't a clue, but I knwo where to go to get good info!
I have a good friend who just purchased a like-new 1998 F150 4X4 shortbed with standard transmission and six cylinder. Unfortunately it didnn't come with an owner's manual.
He would like to get a TT but I told him to find out that the towing capabilities of his truck are BEFORE purchasing. lol
Can you guys/gals tell me what this truck can handle?

In reality, not much. It will probably have a number of around 5000 pounds, but a I6 and manual transmission is pretty weak, and I personally would not want anything over 3500 pounds behind it.

I towed a 22 ft. TT with an E150 Clubwagon van. It had the 6 cyl. and automatic transmission. It was a real adventure everytime I towed, especially if it was windy.
I would stay with an ultra-light TT or a hybrid to keep the weight as low as possible.

Because of the standard transmission, the tow ratings are limited to 3500 pounds.
I towed a 4000 pound trailer with a standard transmission Ford before I knew better. I did not tow very much either, but my transmission did manage to self destruct.
Anything more than a tent trailer, forget it.

We owned a 1997 F-150 SuperCab, 2-whl drive, with the 4.6L V-6 and automatic transmission. Our truck was equipped with the factory-installed towing package (that makes a big difference).
We had a 1998 2619 TrailManor at the time, which weighed (wet) at just under 4,000#, tongue weight of 350#. The truck handled this low-profile trailer very well. However, if the truck had not been equipped with the factory tow package, this would have been too much trailer for it.
If the truck has a 2" hitch receiver installed with the 7-pin Bargman electrical connection next to the hitch, it is equipped with the factor tow package and should be good for up to 5,000#.
I'm sorry, I don't have the factory information on this vehicle anymore.
