The regen cycle dumps extra fuel into the exhaust stream from one of the rear cylinders--Jamesxx951, is this correct?--and it is used to increase the temperature of the DPF and burn off the soot that the filter has collected. Some of the extra fuel on some trucks finds it way into the crankcase, raising the oil level. I could gain as much as a quart-1.5 quarts between changes until installing the tuner. Have seen anecdotal report on Ford forums of much more than that on some '08-'09 models.
One of the odd things that happened with the very early intro of the '08 models, is it resulted in not so many '09-'10 models being sold, and thus most of the forum traffic is on the '08 models--IMO.

Wing nut is correct; regen introduces fuel into the exhaust stroke to increase EGTs for cleaning the DPF.

From my understanding, fuel is fired on the exhaust stroke on cyl 7 and 8 on the 6.4L. I know it fires fuel on the exhaust stroke from the cylinders injectors but not 100% certain the what cylinders do the firing. But believe it is 7 and 8. Then to top it off, Ford decided to say you can go 10K miles on an oil change. So when regen occurs, fuel can bypass the rings and enter the oil. My understanding is the Duramax did the same thing until 2011 also.

Checking the oil level is really critical on the 6.4L because if there was a high pressure fuel leak, that will also add to the fuel in the oil. All high pressure components were mounted inside the engine. I have seen 6.4Ls have well over 30 quarts of fuel/oil mix. Not good for the engine by any means.

Even tho I have gotten rid of the regens, I change the oil at 5k intervals--have since reading the first posts on the 6.4 on the Ford forums.

Wingnut60,
Could you tell a difference in the power after installing the tuner and delete kit? Better Fuel milage while towing wasn't my main reason for me wanting to tuner my F450, I was wanting to avoid all the problems caused from the regen. I have a heavy foot anyways, I'm the only guy I know that has gotten a speed ticket while towing a 5er, haha.

RandyB,
If power to tow is your goal, it is a tremendous addition--however, you have to be aware the the EGTs will climb dramatically on the power tunes when climbing long, even short grades. The H&S Mini offers a lot of settings, many of which I have not even looked at. Those who are tech-oriented and can sync the unit with their computer can do just about any type of power setting, along with transmission shift mods.
As far as just pure power--you cannot imagine the difference just from stock to street--I have tried it a small amount on the next level and I just don't need that much more oomph. Besides, continued stress using the higher fuel injection can run the risk of raising the heads--harder than the 6.0, but still possible.
One of the best results of the tuner is the removal of the speed limiter--this is a HUGE advantage when needing to pass in short lane intervals. Previous, the truck was limited to 82mph, and that just didn't cut it when needing to get around someone with a limited passing interval. Also, having a regen cut in just as beginning a pass event, or during it, or when climbing a long grade, was very aggravating. No such problem now.
You will be facing a stiff price, if you can even find one, now that the EPA has cracked down on the mfgs. However, if you do the install, be sure to have the installer remove the exhaust carefully, with few cuts, and keep ALL the pieces for later reinstall if ever necessary.

Thanks for the info. Yea I know about the EGT's. I had I 02 7.3 F250 it was tuned bigger turbo, exhaust, intake and gauges. I wish I still had it. I just wanna avoid some of the problems the 6.4 has. Yea the tuners are pricey. Truck only had 36k on its still new, maybe over time it will pay for itself. I installed S&B intake and a MBRP intake pipe from the intercooler it replaced the stock pipe that is smashed down to go through the radiator support. Slowly but surly I'm gonna get it set up right. It pulls my 42' 5er great as it is now, I can imagine how it will tow tuned. To do away with the speed limiter would be nice to,

Well, doing 95 in a 10000 lb pickup isn't the thing to do all the time. The 19.5s are rated at 82mph also, and I think that is the reason for the limiter, as it is 97? on trucks with the 17" tires.
By the way, at 169000, I have never had to have the alignment adjusted on the front end--checked, but not adjusted. Have gotten 78500 each out of first 2 sets of tires.
One of the things I did 2 summers ago was to put Centramatic balancers on the axles, and have not had any odd tire wear. I did this because some of the 19.5s were tough to balance with lead weights. www.centramatic.com

Yea I agree about the speed I stick around 75 and some times that not fast enough for the traffic around where I live. Thanks for the info I'm gonna have to check in to that.
