Fiat Chrysler to Buy Back 500,000 Pickups

I guess that I will keep my truck as it will become a collector vehicle since all of the 4X4 will be bought back. And I also want the Cummins plates for 100K miles that Cummins provides.

As I have an 2008, 4X4 Mega Cab; that I just rebuilt the steering linkage on with all MOOG components. I did this because of the oversize tires and the heavier weight of the tires and rims that I am using and I had 80K miles on the original steering components. In May of 2015, I now have 85K and preparing for a 5K trip to the west this fall.

I am not that worry about the front steering linkage issue at all. Since these designs have been around since solid axles were used on 4X4 trucks. My early 60's and 70's vehicle had the same style steering linkage as my 2008 Mega Cab. I have dealt with the dread "Death Wobble" on Chevy Blazer's, Ford Broncos and Jeeps that were all built with solid axles. You just replace the steering components that have worn out due to usage such as tie rod ends, ball joints and the steering stabilizers. This is common practice for on and off roaders who used that era of vehicles! Been there done that and still doing it!

That is bad news...hope it died not hurt their brand blind loyalty. Just like the iPhone.

The Jeep that easily catches fire in a rear end collision. Just like the old old old Ford Pinto. Why in the 2000's they build things like in the early 70's...ugh.

That steering lineage issue in the Ram trucks is also a bad issue. It ius not good to have a truck you can not steer. Really no different than having a really bad ball joint though.

Again...hope they can keep the pressure on GM and Ford trucks as the competition is very very good for us consumers.

My concern is with the politics of Chrysler-Fiat. Why are they getting a $105 million penalty when Government Motors ignition switches have caused so many deaths and they're not being penalized? And what about Honda and their air bag contractor that's had 37 deaths?


There's no way that Chrysler-Fiat should have to buy back 500,000+ pickup trucks for steering problems. That would require $ billions, and C-F doesn't have the cash or the capability to come up with it. Massive truck buybacks would more than depress the retail used truck market for all brands. Dodge-Ram trucks would be flooding the market with buyback trucks and Jeeps. It's just not physically or fiscally possible.


All of these mechanical problems and manufacturer recalls just verify my desire to keep my F250 SuperDuty for another 13 years.

The 500,000 is an " up to " number , I would think you would have to prove that the repair parts did not work on your truck to qualify, for the by-back.
The Jeep fuel tank behind the rear axle , as someone in another forum said , are they going to recall every car built in the 60's & 70's with the tank, between the bumper and the rear end. Word was they plan to install the factory trailer hitch, on those not so equipped, to supply the tank protection that's required.
That would have been a lot easier than the shielding we had to install during the first recall, 2004 if memory serves.
Strange that Fiat/Chrysler has to take the hit when other companies where involved when the vehicles were designed and built.

If they bought my pickup back, it would still cost me another $20-$30K to get into a new one.

I'm not really interested in PU shopping at the moment but guess I'll start paying attention to what new ones have to offer.

I'd probably end up going Ford eco. Has as much power and towing, with better mileage, and ford didn't cop to the bailout. I respect that. They didn't say it would stretch to the 2013 models, so I might be safe.
