2014 Ram 2500 Laramie CCSB CTD 4x4 with factory step bars, spray in bed liner, factory 20in wheels and tires. Have a 10k GVWR. Just me in the drivers seat. It weighed 8040 so I have 1960lbs of payload left with just me in it. Door jamb sticker says 2016 for payload. On my last visit to the RV dealer I heard the sales guy say to me... "You can tow almost any 5th wheel with that" ...ha... Glad I had already decided on travel trailers ....

Never trust anything a salesperson says that has an interest in making a sale.

You now need to add the weight of the truck the weight of any other passengers and gear you will be taking with you. That is unless you travel alone and no gear in which case you are fine. If you are looking at a 5er and don't have the hitch add another 125# for the hitch.

Good choice on a TT. You should find it much easier to stay within capacities.

The sales person isnt "wrong". That truck will tow almost any 5th wheel.
If you want pick things apart im sure you will find almost every toy hauler being towed in southern california is over weight in some way.

That is why the people always chime in about skipping the 3/4 and go right to the 1 ton for 5ers.

For what it's worth, the EGR, DPF and Nox filters weigh about 200lbs. They make for a nice door-stop in an aircraft hanger. LOL

The RV salesman is correct. You can pull almost any 5er made with that turbo-diesel drivetrain, with no problems of overheating anything in the drivetrain or with being the slowpoke holding up traffic on hills or most mountain passes.

But with a big 5er you'll be severely overloaded over the weight hauling capacity of your Ram's suspension and brakes, and maybe tires and rear axle. A lot of people ignore the GVWR limits on tow vehicles, but that's the limit you'll run into first with almost all tow vehicles with single rear wheels (SRW).

Your 2500 can probably tow most 30-foot TTs without being overloaded. But not most 30-foot or longer 5ers.

RV salesmen are programed to sell RV's. They will hook a 5th up to a 1/2 ton as long as it's under the tow rating of the truck. I have the exact truck that is the subject of this thread. Sold a 03 2500 CTD to get it. The new generation of diesels are awsome with power and stopping power. I tow a 30ft TT 7K bumper pull and really barely know it's back there compared to the 03. But there is one thing I know and will always remember, Speed Kills.

Then you must weigh 206# as they allow a driver for only 150# in payload.
