I bought a 2005 Excursion 6.0 4 x 4 new. I traded it in on a 2005 Lexus LX470. I've had less trouble with it since I got it two years ago than I did with the new Ford in the first 3 weeks. The 6.0 is an engineering nightmare POS. The only reason to buy a 6.0 is if you absolutely love the Excursion SUV since there is nothing else like it. You will then almost certainly have to spend $8,000 to have it bullet-proofed. You have many other better options in diesel pickup trucks.

Also look for the 04.5 Dodge 3500 with a 6 speed, its a really fantastic long lasting combination.
My 2001 HO had the original VP44 on it when sold last year. By then it had only lasted 210K miles, so I guess the VP-44 really is junk. The replacement pump is only $1,200 and takes an hour to replace. The key is to watch your lift pump pressure. A FASS pump and fuel pressure gauge eliminates all issues with the VP44.

To expand your recommendation - the 2003 to 2004-1/2 5.9HO with the NV5600 is a great combination to look for. The CR injection made quite a difference in HP and torque in the B Series Cummins engine.

IN 2005 the V-10 was an available choice. It had nearly the same towing capacity as the Excursion with the PowerStroke.

Lemons

I purchased a new King Ranch Power Stroke with the 6.0 around 2006. The first 30 days it was in the shop 22. Serpentine belts kept flying off, radiator had all the rear fins flattened down so it over heated. An idler pulley was installed wrong/bent. The drivers side mirror fell off. The AC compressor almost fell off. The chrome bumpers began to rust. A number of injector problems. A turbo hose kept blowing off and there were strong exhaust leaks into the cab. There were loose and corroded electrical connections on the engine. Ford was forced to buy it back, but that took about 18 months. During that time Ford did everything they could to avoid responsibility. They even sent a "factory engineer" to chat with me to say it was all "normal" and that the exhaust leak was common to ALL ford diesels. It wasn't of course, and my air quality testing service said it was not safe and that OSHA would require supplemental ventilation or supplied air and respirators. Additionally, the Ford guy had the "ENGINEER" title on his business card, but he was NOT an engineer....just pretending. I am a licensed mechanical engineer. As such, I consider that a bit fraudulent and rather offensive. It's also illegal in most states to claim or present oneself as a professional engineer without having earned the degree and accreditations (just like Md's and Attorneys, Police, EMTs and etc.) That also worked in my favor with the court arbitrator and Ford had to pay a complete refund without depreciation including my trade-in value, and permanently title the truck as a lemon. Never again will I even consider anything ford...mostly because of their lies, hiding from responsibility, and holier-than-thou attitude in my numerous attempts to get the thing safely and reliably operational.

Don’t be afraid of the 6.0!

I have a 2004 Excursion. Ford replaced the head gaskets at 65,000 miles. It had 218,000 miles on it when decided to have it dealerproofed aka bulletproof.

This shop offers a lifetime head gasket warranty.

I had no problems at the time but I pull a 10,000 lb. camper and didn’t want anything to come up on one of my trips. I have all the faith in the world in my 6.0 I will stike out across the USA with no fear of breaking down. I hope this helps you with your decision.

This morning I had the biggest scare of my 15 years owning my 6.0. none of my guages would work. OMG the world has come to an end. I'm probably going to have to dump $10,000 into it just to correct this major problem. After an exhausting 10 minutes of trouble shooting I found a blown fuse. Thank God now I can get back to touring the country. Love my 6.0.

I would not even consider a 6.0 if it has been so called (bullet proofed) I own 3 of them that are absolutely stock except for a mild chip with very little issues. If people just knew how to maintain a 6.0 the right way and not treat it as a 7.3 or a gasser, they would take back all the negative words. I would look for one that has not been molested with bull crap and ons and definently stay away from the so called ( bullet proofed).

Ford 6.0 Diesel

My son is an avid Ford owner and won't touch the 6.0. He has driven a 250 with the 6.7 for several hundred thousand miles and just recently bought a new F350 with the 6.7. He pulls a 28' inside hauler for work and living quarters with a gross trailer weight at 22,000 pounds.

If I was 30 years younger and working full time like I used to, I would have a 6.7 for sure. But as it is my 6.0 is paid for and hopefully will get me down the road another 100,000+ miles. At 15,000 a year that's 6 years. I'm sure I can find a nice 6.7 then....if I even need a truck

Just completed another coast to coast trip towing my 5er. From Virginia to Washington across the Great Plains. The Sand Hills of Nebraska to Devil's Tower. The great states of Montana and Idaho. Glacier National Park thru the Grand Teton mountains. Yellowstone to the Great Salt Lake. Oklahoma,Texas, and on thru Arkansas and Tennessee to Virginia. 16,197 miles of unbelievable scenic byways of this great country. Did it all in my completely stock 2003 6.0 F-250. Not one issue. Planning our next trip now to California or Alaska not sure which. No doubt my 6.0 is up for it!

I've got a 07 F250 with over 200K miles.I do all my own maintenance and upgraded the oil cooler and EGR.Still has the TTY head bolts and heads have never been off.Maintenance is key on these motors, regular oil changes(I use full syn) and fuel filters. In stock form they are pretty good motors, problems occur when they are modded,(tuner and big turbos)Maybe I just got one of the good ones.

Way late, but for anyone reading to know, ALL Ford diesel engines up to and including the 6.4 (meaning the original 6.9, 7.3, 6.0 and 6.4) were Navistar (old International Harvester) manufactured engines. Many 6.0 and 6.4 engines are found in school busses and other such vehicles and they break too.

After all the issues with the 6.0 and 6.4, Ford engineers were tasked with designing their own diesel engine in house. They looked at everything in the past, and all of the competition and the issues with every diesel engine on the market since time immortal, and the result is the FORD DESIGNED and MANUFACTURED 6.7 engine. It is a relatively trouble free design and will probably soldier on in the Ford lineup for a good number of years.
