How miles on the truck and how many of those are towing miles? Any extreme hot mountain driving?

I bought a new F-150 in 2015 and went through this 3.5 Ecoboost vs. 5.0 choice myself. I try to keep a truck 10-12 years and get all the goody out of it. The 3.5 EB has more torque which is what you use for towing. But the 5.0 had 387 ft. pounds and 385 hp. I went with the 5.0 based on my perception of reliability. I just didn't want to take a chance on one of those turbos going out. So far, the 5.0 has easily pulled my 26', 6,200 lb loaded trailer through the Smokey Mountains. I haven't pulled in the Rocky Mountains out west yet. The higher elevations would favor the EB.
I get about 11 mpg towing on level interstate. Driving around town, I get 19 mpg if I keep my foot out of it. That V8 does have a nice sound and it will get up and go if you want it to.

My F250 diesel turbocharger is now 15 years old and has required no maintenance. The question is whether you want that low rpm torque or do you want to drop a few gears when climbing hills and turning 5000 rpms with the 5 liter?I
I did rent V-8 F150 truck for a couple of days. I had a chance late at night to run it up to 90 mph on a downhill straight mountain road. It does have an impressive passing gear.
But what is nice is that Ford has no bad motors in their pickup trucks right now. And the price on the 2.7 Ecoboost after incentives is really right

Agree, Ford really picked up their game with the new engines in 2011. Then updating them and adding the 2.7 eco-boost.
I test drove the 3.5 Eco-Boost in the old heavier F-150 and thougt that was a very fast truck. The best on the market.
I would advise test driving the 5.0 litre and then the 3.5 eco-boost. Either truck will make you smile. Pick the one that makes you smile more.

I had the 5.0 in my last ford and now for the last 2 years I have the 6 cylinder twin turbo. I would never go back!

Ford 5.0 vs EcoBoost 3.5L V6 Twin Turbocharged for Towing
Took delivered of my purpose built F-150 5.0L supercab with the 8ft bed. Here are the door stickers. Note that as part of the deal the Goodyear Wrangler load range C tires are being replaced with Michelin E rated rubber.

Wow, 2,437 lbs carring capacity. What package ups the GVWR from 6,800lbs?
I think all those Ford engines are very similar in performance with minor differences.

Max payload package and the 500A package and the 5.0L engine I believe. I was very careful on the build not to add a bunch of stuff that would reduce the payload number. For instance, anytime I chose an option and it took me out of the 500A package I removed the option. The 2 main hits I took on the payload was the club cab which I have to have for my Doxies and the 4 wheel drive which is a must have for me. I am very happy with the payload number. I believe the GCWR is 16,600 and the max towing is 11,200. One heck of a 1/2 ton. We will be towing a Grand Design Imagine 2970RL. All the numbers fall into place. For instance I did not put running boards or the tailgate steps on. All those things add up.

Problem is that test driving empty doesn't give you any sense of how it will perform when loaded. I've had a lot of V8 trucks that felt plenty powerful and ran well. Hook a trailer behind them that weighed as much as the truck and it became a whole different ball game. It became very evident that the low end torque wasn't there like it is with the 3.5L Ecoboost. Last week I had a loaner F150 with the 2.7L Ecoboost. Running empty it felt just as fast and responsive as my 3.5L under normal driving conditions. Hooked up my boat that weighs in at just under 3K and could tell a significant difference at that point. While it still performed well, you could tell there was a 100 ft.lb. difference in the torque output. Get into high altitudes and you'll notice even more of a difference between an Ecoboost and a naturally aspirated V8. As far as the turbos go- that is a possible repair that would have to be made at some point that one should consider. However, I don't think you should put as much weight into that as some people seem to. The failure rate for turbos in general seems to be very low. And if you happen to need to replace them you can get a pair of aftermarket ones for $875.
