I was shopping online for a diesel equiped truck the other day, and came across the high idle switch option. Can anyone on this board tell me the pros and cons of this option. I am looking at the 6.6 duramax 2500hd pickups. I can't find anything that explains why I would need this option.
Thanks in advance

I added it on my 03 D/A; but its standard on my 07, only not as good of control. Its used mostly in winter / cold weather to raise idle up to about 1100 rpm so engine warms up properly. At normal idle the diesels do not warm up very well. Also, on high idle it could idle for hours without harm to the old "cylinder wash out" theory. It is very helpful in colder weather.

There is some talk on the Cummins forums about high idle. With the feature activated, you can use the cruise control buttons to increase the idle.

I believe the feature is intended for PTO operation.

The 03 and newer Cummins will bump the idle up to 1000 RPM by it's self when it needs to, when it is really cold.

It is also used on the newer DPF equipped trucks that when idling for prolonged periods of time it helps prevent the DPF from becoming clogged as fast
