Try to get the truck "converted" to and titled as an rv, requirements vary according to the jurisdiction that you live in, check with the dmv. If you can not get this done, at the least get it registered as a private truck (not apportioned). Since you are not using it in commerce, you are not subject to the commercial vehicle code and its accompanying requirements of IFTA, log book, DOT number, stopping at scales etc. BUT you have to get it registered and then USE it as a private vehicle, the weight of the combined truck and trailer are then a non issue (when worrying about the 26,000 weight limit of DOT etc). It can be done and usually fairly easy but takes a little research to see how your jurisdiction handles it. CAUTION, do the legal research yourself, do not trust DMV or law enforcement to know the answers because they likely will not. When you find the appropriate regs, make copies and keep them with you to prevent problems on the road or at registration time at the DMV. I have done it, not at all complicated in Oklahoma but harder to do in other states in the lower 48. Good luck AND the reference to the escapees forum with HDTs is absolutely the best advice and the best place to find a large community of folks from all over who have done this very thing. Go over there and post your questions and you will find LOTS of good help and advise. All just my experience and opinions.
