In-bed fuel tanks for pickups
Apparently home-made fuel tanks are not legal. Homemade fuel tank in pickup bed brings arrest.
There is a new alternative to a heavy steel or aluminum in-bed fuel tank. Titan in-bed fuel tank.

He is stupid.
Removed vin, wrong plates, and making a tank for that much fuel? and you're assuming that it being home made is illegal. Probably the amount of it.

TF only lists that their tanks comply with all rules...and I appreciate the notes for the links.
Here are the DOT rules: Liquid fuel tanks. - Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration
I have not read thru them completely, but I believe that for DIESEL tanks, the rules are not as tough as gasoline tanks. I think there is a liquid weight limit that governs how much extra diesel you can carry without being placarded.
There are lots of over-the-road trucks that tow vehicles for a living and they almost all have the 100gal L tanks in the bed.

Many over at another forum I visit infrequently have the titans because the CC's only have a 26 gallon tank (probably to limit weight, so you can ride in it and not be over gvw  )

Rather than go for a in-bed tank I purchased a 60 Gal replacement tank from aerotanks.com and had them install it.

The reason for the 100 gal limit is because anything greater than that and the driver must have a CDL with a hazardous material endorsement. There are exceptions for saddle tanks on large trucks, but a as a general rule of thumb, if it's equal to or over 110 gallons you are now considered a shipper for a bulk hazardous material. There are also annual testing procedures for the bulk vessel that have to be complied with.

Thanks. I thought there was some rule about weight/capacity in place. Do you happen to know how that breaks down regarding OEM tank + aux tank? Do they figure all together? Or does the OEM tank not count?
