Installing a locking handle on my Sierra tailgate

I've gone ahead and done it....finally, after 6 years of ownership, I visited my GM Parts dealer and bought a locking handle for my Sierra's tailgate. I prefer to work with wood rather than metal, but decided to try installing it myself to save a few bucks. Followed the instructions carefully, and am happy to report that the install went smoothly. Well, fairly smoothly - only one skinned knuckle!

The really neat thing about the particular lock I selected is that once you've installed it, you take the key of your choice (I used my truck's ignition key), insert it fully, and turn. This AUTOMATICALLY PROGRAMS the key to the lock. How cool is that?

I'm sure all makes and models can get the same technology, either from the dealers or aftermarket, and if your truck doesn't have a locking handle, this is an easy and effective security solution. Inexpensive too.

My 2014 ram locks the tailgate with the keyless entry and unlocks with doors as well. I like this as I've heard of some that had them stolen. Especially nice if you have a topper on it.

Glad you only had one skinned knuckle. Sometimes these things can give you many. My knuckles and fingers stay scratched up all the time since I work with my hands.
