Just curious? Who tows a 5er with 3/4 ton.

I tow mine with my f250, works great. I'm over manufacturers under rated payload. Under on all other ratings.

Just a guess but I'd say at least 50% of 5th wheel owners use 3/4 tons judging by what I see while walking around CG's and RV parks.


I tow a 9000lb 5er with an 1800lb pin. 12 2500 Ram CTD. I'm 200lbs over GVW but well under GCVWR and tow rating. Not worried as the 12 Ram 2500 and 3500 share all components.

My Ford dealer, who I have been with a long time, says the ECOBoost is a better haul unit then the Ford 250 with 3100 Payload and 12,100 Towing vs. the Ecoboost with 2650 Payload and 11,500 Towing

I would be hauling a 27.5 RLST Jayco Fifth Wheel 8130 lbs. total weight dry, Pin Weight 1525 Dry(from the yellow sticker on the unit after manufacture) plus cargo of 1400 to 1800 lbs so hauling around so 9500 to 10,000 lbs.


So what do you think? Super Duty or Ecoboost. Or what additional Info to I need to get to properly evaluate both.

One thing that kind of scares me is the main basement storage compartment of the Fifth Wheel is all the way forward on the RV Chassis underneath the bedroom and bathroom which is also all forward weight. How much of this weight should be added to the pin weight.

Dont try to justify your TV with what others are doing. Compare the trailer weights to the towing specs for your TV to determine if you have an adequate truck. Many others are towing their trailers with inadequate TV's and running the risk of having a suicide rig. You are legally responsible for having an adequate TV.

I agree with your dealerperson that the EcoBoost drivetrain is better for pulling a heavy trailer than the 6.2L drivetrain in the F-250, provided you don't exceed the GVWR of either tow vehicle. The HD Payload Pkg in the F-150 is not available for 2015 model year, and will be delayed availability for 2016 model year. Without that HD Payload pkg, you cannot safely tow a 10,000 pound trailer without being overloaded.

The 6.2 V8 in the F-250 is barely adequate to tow a 10,000 pound trailer. Consider doing it right by spending the big bucks and ordering the 6.7L turboDiesel in the F-250. Or better yet, order the F-350 SRW turboDiesel to gain that extra 1,500 pounds of payload capacity. Then you'll be in hog heaven when towing a trailer that grosses 10,000 pounds.

Towed a 13k 5th wheel with a 98 K2500 GM 6.5L Diesel for 9 years. It performed really well and the rear springs carried the load better then the present F250 that needed additional spring plies.
Now the F250 has towed the newer unit of 15k lbs for the past 7 years,
I find that SRWs served me well. Very important not to overload the tires.
And I average 10k miles per year towing the unit.

What does the F150 weigh compared to the F250?
Which of these do you think would do a better job of controlling the weight of the trailer?

Does the F150 really have the Max payload option and does it come with E-load tires good for 80psi?

Also, the wet pin weight will surely be 2k pounds+. Not to mention the weight of the hitch in the bed!

Why would you on purpose plan to tow with an overloaded tow vehicle?

Also, double check the rear GAWR of the tow vehicle. Lots of late-model tow vehicles, including my F-150, have rear GAWR that will barely support the GVWR of the tow vehicle.

He has a 2500, it has the same rear axle as the 3500.

I got this really great deal on a 5ver and an old diesel Passat. I know it will look funny with a 5th wheel hitch on the roof, but I believe that I can make it work!
