KIA Steering Lock
Something I learned and wish to pass on........
My Toad is a 2013 KIA Soul 6 speed manual. When I first pulled the unit (I use a Dolly) I left the key on Accessory and after a 6 hour pull arrived with no battery problems. Same scenario on the return trip.
Before the next trip I experimented in my sloping drive way and discovered the steering was not locking. I inquired on a popular KIA forum and got mixed answers of yes and no on the locking function. So to date I have made several trips with the key removed.
What I recently discovered by experimenting again in my sloped drive way is the steering does not lock until the KEY IS REMOVED. This is to say if I drive the car unto the dolly (or if I was pulling 4 down) and simply turn the key off and leave it in the ignition the steering will not lock nor will there be any battery drain. With the key off and never removed after stopping the car it has totally free steering.
I have pulled the car (on dolly) over 4000 miles with the steering locked and apparently with no ill effects so I got "lucky". From now on I will leave the key in off position. I pass this on to those who may have the same situation and concerned about battery drain and perhaps un-needed extra wiring.
