Weigh the truck fully loaded....subtract rear axle weight from RAWR
Difference in weight is what you can add to rear axle in the form of wet pin weight

A Google search that I used shows 8,000lbs to 10,000lbs conventional towing for a 1996 F-250. That was from a Ford forum general comments.

Not sure when a 1/2 ton truck had 1,000lbs payload and 3/4 ton truck had 1,500lb payload but back in the mid 90's that might have been true.

Even in today's trucks, 2011 and newer, a F-250 diesel really can not tow even a mid sized 5th wheel because the payload is too low. A mid sized 5th wheel just puts too much weight on a diesel truck.

For your truck I would stick to the small 5th wheels that would only put 1,000 - 1,500lb of weight on the truck. I say this because payload of a current F-250 diesel is about 2,300lbs. I know in 1996 that truck is not as strong as more current trucks.

The frame is old school mild steel which would worry me. My friend's 1997 frame had a kinds of problems from rust to breaks. He welded the frame back together a few times. His 7.3 litre diesel was not very powerful either.

Don't worry about towing capacity, you'll run out of payload capacity long before you reach towing capacity with a fifth wheel camping trailer.

Right. ↑ ↑ ↑

I had a more-powerful '99.5 F-250 SuperDuty 4x2 CrewCab PowerStroke turbo-diesel I put over 100,000 towing miles on (200k total miles) over 10 years. My 25' 5er with one slide (2000 Keystone Sprinter 25RKS) had GVWR of 8,900 pounds and usually grossed about 9,000 pounds when loaded for a cross-country trip. I hot-rodded the engine to 300 HP with a towing tune, so no problem pulling that 9k 5er over the mountain passes. But with just me and DW and a toolbox in the truck, I was slightly overloaded over the GVWR and payload capacity of the truck.

Without the towing tune, that engine had 250 HP, and would downshift out of overdrive for every little bump in the road. Irritating, thus the hot rodding. With an OBS F-250 diesel, I would not want to tow that 9k 5er. YMMV.

I would be interested in seeing both numbers and how the cab configuration affects payload.

Does the frontal area apply to the 7.3 Diesel? I had no mention of frontal area for our 2001 Ram 2500 CTD. The 10,000# sounds a bit high for the 3.55's but should pull it fine.
