The correct tool for the job is the way to go. Why would anyone consume an expensive diesel truck just to haul their butt to work?

Maybe, like many of us, we want a dual purpose vehicle and don't want a third vehicle for a two person family even though we have a four car garage
Had a 2012 f250 and then a 2013 f350 ford 6.7 for my daily driving and periodic 5'er towing... worked out fine! and def was a non-issue.
we went everywhere in the trucks since the wife didn't want miles on her car!
Especially given that both the trucks were outfitted nicer than her lil Explorer sport
But, traded in the 350 on our monaco, so yes, I guess we are a 3 car family now... but the jeep serves dual purpose too - as a DD and toad...
HATED to get rid of that nice truck :(

Well let's see. More insurance, more taxes, more tags and registration, more maintenance. The list goes on and on!

Why not? Not sure what you think is wrong with it. Most gassers get 15-16+ mpg on the hwy. Diesels get in the 17-20+ mpg range. Overall they're the same truck with just a different motor.

Maybe where you live. Can't bundle everyone into the same conclusion. I live in Oregon. No taxes on my truck. Same registration as a 1/2 ton. Maintenance is a little more but not enough to make it unaffordable.

If I drive my truck every day, I know it will start every day. I drive about 12K a year so it will take 10+ years to put any real wear on it. So , it won't last the rest of my life. That's OK, the only thing I want to last the rest of my life is my dog.

Wish I lived in Oregon. I live in a "Commonwealth" state where the government thinks all your wealth belongs to them.

Thanks everyone for replies and input. And yes I'm still juggling the thought of restoring/customizing my 01 vs buying a $70k new truck. It's all about what I really need vs what I want. That's a personal struggle that will be a fight to the end.

if you will pay $71K for a new truck - I've got some swamp land in Florida for you
(I know you are just using list price !)

I've had my 13 DMax for 1 1/2 years got it with 26,000 miles and now have 44,000. Never got a regen notice. I drive it locally maybe 2-4 miles, but it will also go out on the road weekly. Change oil and filter every 5 and fuel filter every 10. Tags are same as 1/2 ton truck (as well as my wife's Impala) and insc is not noticeable higher. No taxes on it other than the excise tax when I bought it. With all that said I rather drive my 04 surburban as it does not look like your looking out over the back 40 when driving the thing. But dang does that diesel pull good!

Likely the OP can get by with a small economy car for his 16 mi each way commute, and a truck isn't the right tool for that job. Just check the trade-in price for a truck with 50,000 more miles and you will find a huge difference. Now add in the additional cost for fuel, oil and tires and see if it starts to make sense.
I was at a dealer today considering updating and had I put the extra 50,000 miles on the truck, it would have cost me $13,000 in trade-in value. In addition there would have been the extra expenses mentioned above. Now consider that the truck would have been high miles and not as reliable for the long trips. I'll save it for when it is really needed.

Maybe an economy car is not desired? My 3500 rides rough over bad roads, but it's loaded with every option and creature comfort and I would not want anything less in a commuter car. If I had an extra 100k laying around, I'd grab an Audi A8 for work and use the truck for camping and hauling...that's not likely to happen so I'll put miles on my truck...65k since may 2014. I will tire of it before the cummins quits on me

I purchased my 01 dually 4 years ago and put 30k on it. Mostly just my DD to and from work. Rides ruff and have $0 fuel cost. Gotta love no emissions equipment. But it is a 16 year old truck and it's getting to be the point of put money in it or just buy new. So my syco research process has begun.
