new tow van

looking at a 2014 chev 3500 ext. passenger van 6.0 v8 3.73 rear gears to tow 25' TT aprox. 6000lbs tow rating of van is 8700lbs What else should I be thinking of or looking at? Just sold the motor home so going back to towing is giving me some questions. Thanks for your thoughts.

sounds like a dream! And probably over kill, but so what as long as it doesn't beat your trailer up. You should be well within all of the weight ratings. It's similar to towing with a 3500 chevy truck.

I would just get myself a blue ox weight dist hitch, and head out after it's setup.

The problem with passenger vans is that they can either haul a van load of people or a mid-sized TT, but not both at the same time without exceeding the payload capacity of the van.

So get rid of most of the seats in the van, and don't think you can haul lots of other weight in the van.

There are two weight limits that will bite you in the butt.

One is the weight limits of the receiver hitch at the back bumper of the van. You cannot tow a travel trailer (TT) that weighs over about 4,000 pounds without exceeding the weight-carrying (WC) capacity of the hitch. Heavier TTs require a weight-distributing (WD) hitch. A wet and loaded TT that weighs 6,500 pounds will have tongue weight (TW) of about 845 pounds. Very few receiver hitches have WC weight capacity of 845 pounds, so you'll need a WD hitch.

The other is the GVWR of the van. If you exceed the GVWR of the van, that's called overloaded. So use the CAT scales often. Add the weights on the front and rear axles of the van and compare to the GVWR of the van.

Look at the diesel Savana or Gmc. Tow rating is 10k. Can get with 2nd row seat.
