We used to tell customers with their new Ram/Cummins not to expect their best mileage till the truck had at least 12,000 miles.
What's your gear ratio ? Current MPG ?

Not sure what better mileage is, but you do have one towing machine!

With a bumper pull of <7K and doing <65mph you will see 12-13. Under some conditions possible a little more. BTW,,, you will love that truck. No more grades, just places where other people go slow.

"ALL" SRW RAMS with the Cummins have 3:42 gearing.

Dually options are 3:42, 3:73 and 4:10's

Better mpg...when you are smiling ear to ear when you hit the accelerator pedal?

As the man said 3.42s. Overall about 16.5. Just hit 300 miles.

So they changed things in the 8 years since I retired, I didn't get the memo!
I guess they just don't care anymore.

About the only legal things you can do is slow down. When towing, I determined the MPG "sweet spot" on my old diesel was 62 MPG. Faster than 62 and aerodynamic drag robbed MPG. Slower than 62 MPH and the engine didn't make enough horses to climb slight grades without the tranny downshifting for every little bump in the road, killing MPG.

Using cruise control in rolling countryside will also cost you some MPG, compared to manually managing the go pedal to prevent downshifting when climbing a grade

My diesel truck towing 15,000 lb. 5th wheel gets:

9.2 mpg into the wind
10.2 w/o any wind (just normal areo drag)
11 mpg with the wind

Tow with the wind. During a cool spell tow south, during a warm spell tow north or tow west to east and stop.

Hopefully everyone caught that typo. It was intended to say 62 MPH, not MPG. Darned IRV2.com won't allow editing the next morning when you see a typo that needs fixin'. My MPG was around 12 to 12.5 @ 62 MPH dragging my 8k mid-profile 25' 5er across the country.

Yep. Almost exactly 100 km/h. Right at the top of my speedo dial.

With 3.42 gear ratio and 6 speed double over drive transmission, you will probably need to keep the RPM's above 1500, I don't know what that speed is, mine with 3.73 gear ratio and single overdrive 5 speed transmission, 62 is about 1900 RPM and between there and 2000 is where the truck likes to run, that is 62 to 65 mph. I get between 9.5 and 11 mpg, that is with an old technology duramax pulling 12'6" high 16,000# plus 5er.
