Newbies towing

I got behind a brand new TT today being pulled by a Nissan Frontier, the trailer was one of those lightweight, single axle jobs, looked to be balanced decently. They were driving about 30 mile per hour, and were putting on the brakes at every slight curve! They hadn't even started up the mountain yet, so I imagine they were going to be white knuckled before they got to the top, and totally terrified by the time they got to the other side! Hope the experience doesn't turn them sour on camping.

Those smaller TT’s can be more difficult to tow than longer units if they don’t have the anti-sway fairly tight. I was their myself back in ‘85 but on the opposite end, going too fast up and down US 65 in Arkansas when I almost lost it when the tt was power sliding on a straight decline. I had the white knuckles and some shakes on that one!
You can’t learn if you don’t live.... and listen. I started sitting with the old timers at the camp grounds after that I tell you.

They may have been too light on the tongue, or no WDH. A big line behind them, so I didn't take the time to check out their setup.

People don't realize being light on the tongue can be as bad as being heavy! The company I work for pulls a lot of trailers hauling scissor lifts, I had the rental company put lines on the trailer beds so the lifts would be loaded correctly every time. Previously the guys would just load them right to the headboard. That would put 800lbs+ on the hitch. With the truck bed already loaded with 1500-2000lbs of material, 6000 lb+ trailer made for very poor handling!

I started towing runabout type boats as soon as I could rub 2 nickles together out of college.

I thought a 5,000lb boat and a 5,000lb travel trailer would tow the same. I knew something was different as soon as I needed a WD hitch for the travel trailer. They do not tow the same as a travel trailer is the most difficult type of trailer to tow.
