Hi Folks have just bought a FR Lit 26' tagalong. Dry weight 4500 lbs and I'm considering an F150 5.0 with tow package. probably will buy used with under 100000KM (75000miles) What do you think

No problem. If you are set on a F150, I'd consider a 3.5 Ecoboost too. More power, better fuel economy when not towing.

X2 on the 3.5 and you don't lose very much power as you go up in altitude.

X3 on the Ecoboost. If you go up in altitude or trailer weight you'll have some margin. Pulls my 7k trailer like a champ.

If you buy the F-150 with the 3.5 Eco-Boost you risk the chance if getting speeding tickets. That is one fun truck to drive. Zoom zoom.

That is a perfect truck for your new trailer.

Thanks for all the feedback, seems pretty unanimous. My concern with the ecoboost was the fact that I will probably buy used and there is much more complication with turbo. Everything is also more highly stressed. Just my thoughts.

Modern turbo motors have proven to be quite reliable.

The 3.5 Eco-Boost will need timely oil changes and it is best to use a sythetic oil for the best lubrication of the long timing chain.

The advantage of towing with the 3.5 Eco-Boost is it tows kinda like a diesel. Oh the block is made of the same metal alloy as the diesel. Some kind of iron/graphite alloy. Makes the engine block stronger but lighter.

If I bought a used Eco-Boost I would use Pennzoil Ultra synthetic oil every 5,000 miles.

I lost track of the generations of the 3.5 Eco-Boost but I think the gen 1 had 420ft. lbs of torque, gen 2 had 470 ft lbs.torque and gen 3 has 510 ft lbs of torque.

Google can tell you what years the engine power was increased.

I would try to buy a 2015 or newer F-150. 2015 was the big redesign model year.

Go test drive the truck and hit the gas, and try not to smile, bet you can't.

Weve got a bunch of ecoboost 150s at work and they get they daylights beat out of them. Its a good motor. My wifes got the little 1.6 eb in her fusion and its got about 90k trouble free miles. The 5.0 doesnt put out the power of the eb motors, but its no slouch itself.

I read in the car/truck mags that the heavier your lead foot, the less difference in mileage between the 3.5 EB and the 5.0-V8. In fact, under towing, the 5.0 gets better mileage and is a less stressed engine and should last longer.

I just watched a youtube video where all the mechanics in a ford dealer agreed the 5.0 was the best in an f150. I know the coyote is a good motor amd the video suprised me, but the eb motor can take a beating itself.

If it was the one from the dealership in Texas, I can almost guarantee those guys aren't towing up hills. Probably aren't towing at all.

The Ecoboost is actually less stressed than the 5.0 towing. Boost is much easier on an engine than RPMs. My Ecoboost usually is running under 2300 RPM when towing my trailer. The engine just ramps up the boost and pulls in 5th or 6th gear.

I have a 2018 F150 with the 2nd Generation 3.5L Ecoboost. I tow a CrossRoads SunSet Trail 291RK that has a gross weight of 7600lbs. We have been on several trips with the TT, including a 15 day 3700 mile adventure from Texas to upstate New York and back. The F150 with ecoboost was amazing. Never once did it lack for power, hunt for a gear or seem over worked. When not towing, it is crazy fun to drive and when I can stay out of the trottle, I can get 20 mpg all day long.
