New to me 2003 Excursion with 7.3 diesel. Time for first oil change. In everybody's opinion what is the best oil to use for the 7.3?

My only response is to read this link. Personally I use Shell Rotella, but any oil rated for diesel engines (see chart) meets your engine mfgrs. requirements.

Shell Rotella or Motorcraft Diesel. Both are available at Walmart.

Shell Rotella, Mobil Delvac and Chevron Delo are all excellent diesel engine oils.

Amsoil 15/40 is a full synthetic I use and change it once a year. Usually put on 8-10 k.

Our dealership always suggested Shell Rotella. It is a good oil and can be found anywhere. Most engine manufactures say not to change oil brands. they suggest to stay with one brand.

Most diesel geeks who use conventional oils seem to like the Rotella, if you snoop around the diesel truck forums. My choice also.

I happen to be in the oil change business. There are several oils out there that meet the spec for your 7.3. Rotella and Delo are by far the most popular. Rotella also has a 5w40 synthetic that is the most popular synthetic for diesels. I say popular because everyone has an opinion on which one is 'best' for your engine. I read numerous reports over the last 15 years and every one of them says whoever paid for the report has the best oil.

Congrats on the getting the Excursion also. Hard to find a good one in decent shape. I wish Ford or GM one would put a diesel back in an SUV.

I used the local Jiffy Lube to do my F250 6.7. They offer Rotella and a very good price on the change. The guys in the shop in Falcon Colorado were extremely helpful as I figured they would be as we are somewhat rural and every other truck on the road is a diesel. I saved about $70 (paid $117 for the service) and had a good experience.

I called first to ensure they had the oil and the proper filter. I recommend doing the same if you are going this route.

Thanks,

Kelly
