Ordered 2019 F-150 3.5 Eco to tow 23' 3300 lb Trailer

My 2010 F-150 retired with only 238,000 miles... it had a towing cap of just over 5K. I ordered a new 2019 F150 4x2 Supercrew last week and the dealer says 8-10 weeks before it arrives. It is the short bed with 145" WB. We started off with the XL package and added STX package, Max Tow Package, which included 3.55 electronic lock rear, 6750#GVWR Package, Pro trailer backup assist, 36 gal tank, integrated trailer brake, 20 wheels with 275/55R20BSW All season tires, I added the power group, 101A, black platform running boards, trailer mirrors telescopic with LED spotlights, Sirus, tailgate step, rear sensing, XL sport package, fog lamps, 110v/400 watt outlets and factory sprayed bed liner.... we plan to purchase a new Gulfstream 19ERD Woody that weights just over 3,300 lbs.... got the truck for just over $39K out the door... I also plan to use it to tow an 4,000 lb horse trailer from Phenix City, AL to Mt. Pleasant SC (one time trip) ... I think I bought enough truck this time... I figured that this should easily handle all my towing needs. The salesman said the smaller ecoboost would be fine. I went with the 3.5, what do you think, is this overkill or just right?

It is slightly over kill. I come down on the side, I want to tow comfortably, not white knuckled. You will love the power of the 2019 Ford. The 3.5 eco-boost is a powerful engine. 10 speed transmission - cool.

It will be nice to tow without any struggle. My little V8 in my 2010 F-150 struggled pulling a uhaul going up small hills on I-85....Everything we looked at on the lots either had too much equipment that I didn't want or not enough. This is my first time ordering a vehicle.

You will really need to watch the speed. It will be easy (fun) to accelerate in that truck. Maybe too much fun.

I test drove the 3.5 Eco-Boost in the Raptor for my step son. The truck was local to me but 400 miles from him. I gave it the thumbs up so he made the trip to pick it up.

Now the Raptor has the sport bolstered seats and was nose bleed fast. I am thinking the F-150 will he even faster. I know I would get a speeding ticket.

Yes, you have plenty of tow vehicle. But it’s always better to have more than needed. RVing is all about relaxing, and no stress.
We are towing about 50% of what our truck is rated for. Long 8 hr plus day trips are no problem.

On a 2019 Gulfstream Vintage 19ERD, the dry weight is 3,090 lbs with a cargo capacity of 1,294 lbs which means it has a GVWR of 4,384 lbs. Your F-150 will easily tow that travel trailer. Enjoy.

To gain additional sleeping capacity and add 800+ lbs of net carrying capacity, we are considering a slightly larger TT than the 23'. This model is a tandem axle vs the single axle on the 23'. I'm assuming we have enough truck to handle either. Would the slightly larger tandem axle be an easier tow? Excuse my ignorance as I've only towed pop ups and uhaul trailers....

With that trailer, the GVWR is 6,060 lbs. which your truck should be able to tow fine as long as you have a decent weight distribution with sway control hitch. Also, your tongue weight has to be at least 10% of the gross trailer weight which, for this trailer, is 606 lbs.

You'll have no problem handling what you want to tow. You've almost got the specs of most gas 3/4 ton trucks with the max tow package.

The 3.5 Ecoboost is simply a beast. If you ever need more power, you can always add a tuner and get another 80 hp. They will eat up just about every Supercar of the 1960's-70's in the quarter mile.

Dealer called and said that the factory assigned Vin# already and truck will be built 2nd week of April. It could be here much quicker than expected... Decided we will rent a couple of different size travel trailers on RV Share after truck arrives. We are thinking 24-26' max...

I towed a Gulfstream Streamline 22SLB trailer with a 5.0 litre F-150. That trailer was 26.75' in total length. It weighed 5,500lbs. With a Drawtite WD hitch that trailer was very well behaved behind the F-150. Now, I knew I was towing as mpg dropped to about 10.5mpg.

You truck will tow better than my 2011 F-150 as Ford redesigned it in 2015 to be more capable. Plus the Gen 2 Eco-Boost 3.5 is more powerful.

Now your problem will be picking a trailer. Bigger is always nicer.

Very good idea renting a few different sizes to see for yourself. And cool, the 2nd week of April will be here soon. You will like the rock solid feel of the new trucks.

I own one setup nearly identical to yours. In December I bought a new 2018 F150 STX Supercrew short bed 4x4 with the 2nd gen 3.5l ecoboost and 10speed transmission. Max Tow pkg which includes a 3.55 locking diff., 36 gallon tank, brake controler, #7000 GVWR.

We tow a Crossroads Sunset Trail 291RK with a GVWR of 7600#. Its 33'5" long and 11'1" high. With the WDH setup and dialed in, the truck pulls the trailer like a dream. Plenty of power on hills. The comfort level behind the wheel is amazing. The 36 gallon tank makes long trips better with fewer stops. Over the Christmas holidays, we traveled with the camper slightly more than 400 miles without refueling.

I didn't even look at the other engine options as I knew the 3.5l was the only motor for my needs. The truck has tons of power. When not towing, it's very easy to find yourself "playing" with the throttle and be somewhere north of the posted speed limit (especially in sport mode). Fuel mileage is pretty good for a 4x4 at 20.6 average, mostly highway. The STX pkg adds enough creature comforts, electronics and styling without getting too luxurious to be a truck.

I would think you will have more than enough truck for your needs.

I think you did very well. I kind of like the Limited model because of the 450hp and 520tq. Way too expensive though.
