Pin holes on the distribution hitch

I have 2 holes on my weight distribution hitch and just recently decided to pay more attention to that after pulling my TT several times now. In the past I have always put the hitch all the way in and just pinned the last hole. I guess thinking it was just better/safer. Can someone tell me what would be the difference in the 2 pin holes. I'm sure it has something to do with weight.

It will effect the weight slightly , but more to do with clearance to the back bumper on some trucks.

Thanks Skip. Weight distribution is so imperative and limits and so on just wasn't sure.

On my old 05' 4Runner the spare tire is just behind receiver area. So Toyota supplied their own drawer-bar that is a little shorter. So I would assume there are some applications where that 2nd hole would be needed. When I switched over to a W-D on that 4Runner I slide the drawer-bar in and the only hole was OK for the safety pin.

Not sure which brand WD you have but for example, on the Reese it changes from 1k to 1500 when you go in to the last hole like you've been doing. When the shank come out further you have more leverage exerted so the rating drops. Here's a pic from etrailer's site...
