50 mile test drive today with 5th loaded and new bike rack on the new "universal hitch". It performed better than empty! Smooth, comfortable and NO searching for a gear. I Had my wife in following viechle and she reported that the new rack had no wobble or movement. Even running in OD with on problems. New transmission temperature gauge shows 170 at Cruse and 190 tops when backing up hill. Next is 1300 mi run to Florida :-)

Pleased as can be. 1 to 1.5 mpg less when pulling. Worst so far was Doing Kentucky/ Tennessee (Foothills) it pulled in OD and 3rd when under 60 mph. Transmission temperature maxed at 200 pulling up hill at 5mph in accident area, otherwise 165 seems to be normal.

What you are experiencing will be pretty typical of the older trucks. They did not have the massive horsepower and payload numbers you see today but they were real work horses and would do the job just not always as fast and possibly not as comfortable. I know a guy who refuses to buy a new truck and drives his 90' GMC to work everyday and pulls a racecar 200miles away on the weekends. They will do it. Just be ready to trouble shoot and carry some spare parts and tools.

At least you can work on them without a computer.
