Pulling a Small Trailer with Equinox?
Has anyone had experiences with pulling a small (4x8) Uhaul trailer with an Equinox? This is the smallest trailer they have.
My Equinox is the 4 cylinder model which has a 1500 capacity, but I would only have a weight of about half that.

If you have an appropriate receiver hitch on your vehicle and the trailer load is within your Equinox's capacities, I'm not sure why you're asking the question. We have a Subaru Forester that I use to pull a utility trailer often, it does a fine job.

If this will be a one-time thing, (you did say U-Haul), then I would just rent a PU truck or full sized van. By the time you pay to add a hitch to your vehicle you would have easily paid for the rental and ins. and will not have to worry about blowing up the transmission in your car. I would never tow anything with a vehicle that has such a low tow rating. After you subtract the driver, fuel, hitch weight and any passengers, fuel and cargo you will have just enough payload leftover to haul the empty trailer.

I looked in the owner's manual of a 2010 Equinox and it says 1,500 lb trailer with brakes, 1,000 lb without brakes on the trailer. If you're just renting a trailer to haul a refrigerator or other type load, I think you'll be fine. Now if you're planning to haul maximum load across multiple states, I'd think about renting a truck.

I checked into renting a pickup or van, but they would not do a one way trip rental.

U-Haul, Hertz and others will rent one way. Even the smallest box van will be cheaper than adding a hitch to your car and the possibility of blowing it up. You can also get it shipped on private carriers such as U-Ship.com
When dealing with U-Haul it is often best to call the 800 number or book through the national website. The local store may not want to rent their van one way but the corporate site does not care. Sometimes the local store does not want to lose a newer unit and will pretend it is for local only.
I don't know what you are wanting to haul but there are lots of options.

I would not rent a U Haul truck period. You will be much safer with an overloaded car towing for a short trip. I did it years ago with a 120 HP dodge pulling a 5000 lbs trailer cross country.

Those Uhaul trailers are build like tanks to survive rental fleet life. I bet that little 4x8 weighs in close to 1000lbs empty.

If we do actually need to rent a trailer this will be all we would need.

This would be used to transport my motorhome stuff if we buy a motorhome out of state. This stuff would be the jack pads, short ladders, towbars, leveling blocks, etc. that take up a lot of space, but don't weight a lot.

I wouls think it might be less expensive if you were to rent one of those trucks at home depot by the hour....

That trailer does not have brakes so stopping it will really work your car's braking system. If you don't mind the wear and tear, warped rotors etc. it will probably work.

Come on!! The OP is perfectly within his Toad's capacities to use a 535 lb trailer to haul a couple hundred pounds of cargo. To suggest to rent a truck from Home Depot by the hour to travel out of state????? To suggest wear and tear and warped rotors????? Let's get realistic.
