What does the transfer case weigh, and how much of that is on rear? The old stuff I messed with, the front was changed from independent suspension to straight axle. The ride height of a 4X4 was higher. But now I think they make them all sit high...

Yes, to many variable! I know a couple CHP, one works the Commercial division, even he says there is no rhyme or reason why, or what the manufactures rate these trucks. They seem to rate and change weights and rates whenever they want. This is why he says Commiefornia does not enforce weight laws, at least and until something happens!! Also he stated CA does not mandate enforcement of over weight trucks and trailers, that is, unless you just look stupid going down the road with a little Nissan tuck pulling a 30' 5th wheel!

I don't know who told you they don't enforce wt laws but that is not correct. Having trucked in Cali for many years l personally know a few drivers that have been nailed for over weight trucks. You get fined and can't move your truck till the extra weight gets removed.

Non commercial trucks are not subjected to the same parameters.
