Ram 1500 with 3.0 diesel
Doing research for a possible new(er) TV.
Anyone own/towing with the Ram 1500 with the 3.0 diesel? Might be to small for my towing needs, but something to think about.

Not much to think about if you're thinking about using it for the 272RLS. Ram 1500 EDs don't have nearly enough payload for that TT.

I think it's the payload that's going to hurt you on that one.
Advertised tongue on your trailer is 845 lbs dry.....
Payload on that truck is going to be around 1500 lbs...
Your tongue likely weighs more.. let's guess 900 + the weight of your hitch at say 100, that's a thousand leaving you 500 to go for you family and gear...
but I bet for an every day truck it's awesome... I sort of wish I had gone and looked at them before I bought my F150

That's a great 1/2 ton truck - in high demand. Decent towing. You get to judge if it will meet your needs in terms of towing.
The only down side that I can find is that some small amount of these motors seem to catastrophically blow up... And I mean a minor amount, but the stories and successive repairs can be found online.

JMHO: Cost of the up grade from your current TV , to a newer truck with WAY less capabilities , those $$$ would pay your fuel and maintenance bills for a long time.

A 3.0 liter diesel would have trouble pulling the skin off a rice pudding. It's probably less than 120 hp.

You could look at the new 5.0L Cummins-powered Nissans. Looks like they're trying to fill the gap between 1/2 and 3/4 pickups. Could be perfect if you're trying to not step up to the full size trucks.

Better get with the modern Diesel:
The 2.0L VW diesel puts down 140-150hp and 240ft/lbs of torque. Before getting busted for cheating anyway..
The 3.0L in the Eco-diesel puts down 240hp and 420 ft/lbs of torque.
Torque is what pulls the skin off that rice pudding, trust me.

Ours has 240 HP and 420 ft.lb of torque. It has really nice power, and is really gutsy when pulling our trailer. Mileage empty is high 20s, almost 30 mpg. Mileage towing is 12 - 13 mpg. The engine is so quiet and smooth it's difficult to believe that it's a diesel engine.
Rear springs are really soft, so any hitch weight makes the back of the truck drop like a stone. Some kind of air bag assist is needed to address this. Also, hitch height is low. The way the tail gate is designed, the hitch ball cannot be higher than about 25".
The 1500 is available with factory air ride suspension. Maybe that's better for towing, but I found the price was horrendous.

I spoke with a couple of folks towing a 25' range TT about the 1500 diesel Rams. They like the power fine for towing, but both daid the truck does not have enough rear suspension for towing. They were both looking at ways to beef up the suspension.

I use airbags with my 2016 Ram towing a 26 ft tt...rear doesn't drop more than 1/4 " with the trailer attached

You can also get these trucks with a self-leveling factory airbag option.
