Nothing wrong with a naturally aspirated gas motor shifting. The 6.0 doesn't produce peak torque until over 4,000 rpm, and peak horsepower over 5,000rpm. Let it eat.

Wasn't as concerned with the motor RPM as I was with the transmission working. Have it in my head all the shifting is not good.

I have towed with 3.42's in 11 RAM Dually 68RFE towing a combined 28-29k and 4.10's in current 15 RAM Dually AISIN towing a combined 33k.

The 11 did a great job towing I would run 5th at 60 with RPM's at about 1750. Only issue was getting the load rolling on a grade. The AISIN with it's lower starting gears would have resolved that.

The 15 tows about the same RPM at 60 in 6th and it gets the load rolling easily on grade even at 33K combined.

My experience is 3.42's with AISIN is good for loads up to the 27-29K range and anything over that 4.10's with AISIN are the ticket.

I have towed a 18-20K dump trailer with my Son's 3500 SRW with AISIN and 3.42's. It took off on grade with no issues.

IMHO 3.73's are not needed based on my actual towing experience.

If you order a 2017 Ram srw with an Asin tranny you can get a different rear end ratio other then 342.

This is incorrect. When you select the diesel and the Aisin with a short box, the standard gear ratio is a 3.42. If you then select an optional gear, a 3.73 requires you also take dual rear wheels...and a long box.

If you select 4.10, it auto resets to a 5.7 gasser.

You CANNOT order any gear but a 3.42 with SRW and a diesel. I believe it has been that way since 2014.

NOT true, with the SRW trucks AISIN or not ONLY come with 3.42's. AISIN is ONLY offered in the 3500's. Dually trucks are the ONLY way to get either 3.42, 3.73 or 4.10 gear sets.

Here's an off-topic question for NW Explorers and Cummins 12V98: what kind of fuel mileage are you getting with your trucks, both while towing and around town? I have special-ordered a '17 Ram 3500 dually 4X4 that appears similar to yours (Aisin & 4:10s, auto-leveling), and it will be towing a Redwood 38RD with a max weight of 17,900. I'm currently driving a Ram 2500 6.4 gasser, and this will be my first dually and my first diesel. What am I in for?

Rear Axle Gear Ratios - Best for Towing

My father gets 8-10 towing his 40' TH at 60-65 mph with 2012 3500 DRW 4.10 with some mpg upgrades. 15.5-17 empty at 70-75mph.

I'm getting 16 combined empty. Our rig is approximately 2008 k gross. Have only towed a few hundred miles with the '17 RAM, but our '15 averaged about 9 towing. I usually tow at 70 on cruise control depending on road conditions and the speed limit.

I AVERAGE West Coast hand calc 9.0 driving 60mpg. 7.5 to 10.5 +-. Freeway 60-70mph 15+. 4.10 gears towing a combined 33K.

You will LOVE the truck!!! Good call on the factory rear air ride.

So, what do you think?
what you are trying to accomplish by swapping rear axle ratios? are you pulling maximum for the TV? what are your driving habits/preferences? myself, I have never felt the need to alter the stock gearing on any TV I've owned. I simply downshift when needed, hold the gear, and go slower - saves fuel, wear/tear, and costs. only once long ago did I play with ratios indirectly, by increasing tire size. it worked for the specific case: manual tranny with a "granny gear", and dropped the cruising rpm about 300rpm to be at the lowest rpm for max torque. I did this not for gearing etc, but greater comfort! - the comfort tires were 1 size up from stock :-). I doubt I will ever have the same need again.

If you find it shifting up and down a lot, just lock it in whatever gear you find the best. I agree with you its not good shifting back and forth all the time.
