So, dumb question, probably, but as I haven't done a 5th wheel before:

I've got a 2015 Ram 3500 w/o the 5th wheel package. I'd like to duplicate (preferred) or relocate the 7-pin to the bed area.

I see there are various kits to do this, but can someone walk me through the best way - meaning not spliced way to do it.. Is there something that plugs (IE Mopar) option so I don't have to splice up the wiring harness?

Most any hitch shop or truck accessory shop will have a prewired plug you can purchase. It should cost about $60-$70. You simply unplug the factory receptacle underneath the bumper and plug the new one you bought into it. Then plug the other end back into the factory connector. Hardest thing is drilling into the truck bed. It takes about a 2 inch hole. It even comes with a spacer in case the area is not thick enough for the whole receptacle. It takes maybe 30 minutes for the whole job.

No problem drilling the hole.. So the new deal plugs into the existing bumper 7-pin and provides an outlet at the bumper in addition to the bed? Make/model specific?

Yep just plug and play. The plug matches the factory plug exactly. All the models of the same year have the exact same plug. The dealer can tell you which one you need. If my memory serves, they have used the same plug since 2010. Earlier than 2010 models used a different one than 2010 on. Also on memory I think it is more of a round plug now. The 2009 and earlier was more of a rectangle plug.

I used a 2" hole saw that I happen to have. It is not even a bi-metal saw. It was just a wood. I've used on 4 or 5 trucks now. Just go slow and works fine. It's a black and decker hole saw. I probably paid $7 or less for it. I always put the plug on the drivers side about 10" in from back and about halfway up the side. I'm a contractor so trash gets thrown in the bed frequently and I keep it higher to hopefully avoid damaging the plug.

With the Ram wiring system always use a plug that will plug into the existing receptacle in the rear bumper. Starting around 2006 Ram has gone to a Can-bus wiring system and a TIPM for the truck electrical components. Rams are notorious for the TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module) failures if the wiring load is incorrect or shorted to ground. This is a $600 to $700 replacement cost the last time I checked if the TIPM needs to be replaced.
By plugging into the bumper trailer plug the TIPM will not see an electrical load variation and may not short to ground by splicing into the wiring.

I used a plug and play and my plug is between the drivers side rear wheel well and my tailgate, about 4 inches off the bed

Go to your local Chrysler dealer they have the part that plugs in. Drill a hole in the side of the bed box. I will post a pic.

The plugs separate behind the bumper, and the new harness plugs in both ends with no cutting or splicing. This still leaves your factory plug for other trailers. I did this on my 2012 truck. A little dielectric grease in the plugs will insure a water tight seal!
