Has anyone used a MTD like a box van and shortened the wheel base to use as a 5th wheel hauler????

AH, Good for you! I have done refrigeration, HVAC, and industrial fitting. I enjoyed the industrial fitting the most. I worked in Minnesota until retirement.
Back to your initial question, check into an HDT for your truck. You can get one and title it as a motorhome in NY from what I understand and they are about the same price wise.

I had ours singled (could have made it any wheel base), bed built, hitch installed. Paid 21,500 for truck, 7300 for singling, bed, muffler put under bed, batteries relocated (they would have been under bed). Hitch was 4200 (ET by Henry). Any setup is possible on these rigs.

Just sitting in a parking lot and this rig rolled up. Thought all you MDT folks would be interested. Couple are full time and had it custom built at a shop in BC. Tow a 37 ft fiver Now that's sweet.
