Thank goodness

I took my new to me 2001 F350 cclb 115,000 mile truck to my transmission guy to change the shift position sensor. He lifted it by the frame which let the axles hang from the springs. I have jacked it up several times under the axles. He called me and said one of the rear leafs on the driver's side was broke and fell out.

I went to a local spring shop and had it replaced. I drove 25 miles home on the interstate. I got under to look at the new spring and the one below it had broke! I called the shop and they were dumbfounded. They hammer on all the other leafs when replacing one. So now there's no way I trust any of the leafs on either side. I told them I did not want to go halfway with this and said to replace the rear springs both sides.

We are leaving in one month pulling our 13,000 lb 5th wheel. Had I not found the first broken leaf it could have been catastrophic. Not sure if there is a moral to this story but.....

Good move. Truck leaf springs are kind of forgotten items til something like this happens.

I had to change a spring ply and my spring shop advised me to keep an eye on them. I installed a secondary ply to protect the main ply.
They don't break due to loading. They break due slapping while unloaded. So shocks is also in order.
My cousin with an F350 SRW told me his truck was unstable and I looked at his rear springs and he had a broken main ply each side.
They do break.
