Tire chains

I'm heading from Alaska to Arizona picking up a new 35' fifth wheel. My last trip up the ALCAN highway we ran into a blizzard and I bought some cross link cable tire chains, required to continue our trip.

I see these chains are not recommended for use on a trailer, why is that?

Are chains ever used on towed units? If not, do I just back off on the brake controller if I encounter foul weather, i.e. snow?

I've been driving in Alaska for 45 years just never towed a heavy trailer under poor conditions.

Thanks, Larry

Some chains might not be able to handle the twisting and lateral forces that trailer tires experience. There are chains that can be used on trailers, I like Z-Chain myself, and have a set for my travel trailer.

I have towed several times with standard reinforced tire chains. They work just fine but traveled at slow(20/25/mph) speeds. I prefer to wait for better weather. Scary to travel in snow/ice for me.

State regs can often require drag chains when chains are required. Oregon is one such state.
