Tow capacity for 92 GMC 2500?
I've searched this site, as well as online, for my answer and can't find it. Hoping someone can help me out!
In order to get rid of a payment, we're looking at selling our 2004 K2500HD and buying something older with no payment. I've come across a 1992 GMC 2500, 4x4 with a 7.4L long box, that I'm considering. I need to know if it will tow our camper ok.
Our TT: 2001 Fleetwood Prowler 29F, just under 30', 8700 GVWR, 6190 Gross Dry, 840 hitch weight.
Is there any way to find out the towing capacity, gears, etc from the VIN? Or, does anyone know what the specs would be?
Thanks!
Pat

Do you have the ability to look at the drivers door. There should be a sticker on there that gives the towing capacity. If not just call a GM dealer service dept. and ask them a general question on towing capacity.

I have a '90 chevy truck brochure with all the rating for that year models. I don't think much was changed in the '90-'92 time frame.
The 2500 4x4 with a 3.73 gears show a 9500 lb tow capacity and 4.10 get you a 10k tow rating. The truck has the old super tough tried and true C6P chassis.
You can get your gear ratio from the oem/std equipment RPO code placard. Mine was in the glove box. Gear ratio RPO codes ran something like a GT3= 3.42 and GT4=3.73 and GT5=4.10 if I remember right.

Thanks for the info! I sent an email to the dealer to for gear ratio, so hopefully they'll get back to me soon. On a side note, does anyone know if I'll have a substantial height difference between the two? I may just have them measure for me.

If you don't get this truck , and have to go looking for trailer tow capacities again.
Camping Life Magazine , maintains a tow rating data base on their web site , rating back to 1990.
And of course , I just went to check it out and , it's " under construction."

I towed a 12k 5th wheel with my 2500 for 9 years. It has great mechanicals. Only problem was the front brakes needed more attention.
